Body Cleansing And Detox

Last time I talked about fasting.  A great way to allow the body to rest.  Our bodies use so much energy digesting food, that a one day fast a few times a month, can certainly help with healing, not to mention you could learn a lot about yourself.  What’s the difference between a fast and a cleanse?  Here’s what Wikipedia says about a cleanse…”Body cleansing or detoxification is a treatment in alternative medicine which proponents claim rid the body of accumulated harmful substances that exert a negative effect on individual health.  Critics argue that such cleansings are often unnecessary, and are based on questionable or disproved scientific claims.”  Do I think they are necessary?  Read on………

Certainly the object is to relieve the body of the stuff that accumulates over the years.  I’ve heard stories of not just waste product, but one woman said she released a crayon that she had swallowed as a child during a cleanse.  Not convinced?  Here’s more…..My parents and brother were working at a well known health retreat where detoxing with raw food, wheatgrass and green drinks, is the first step to healing.  My Dad tells a story about a woman who was diagnosed with a tumor in her uterus and before surgery; she was going to give this process a try.  One day my Dad is walking by her room and she comes running out screaming “I passed the tumor!  I passed the tumor!”  Sure enough, that’s what she actually had done.  She took the mass to her doctor for diagnosis.  Get ready for this…..not for the squeamish……The mass was a tampon that had remained in her body for probably years and the body was protecting itself from this foreign body the only way it knew how.  Hence, the tumor.  Ok, so now you may be ready to set an intention for your cleanse or fast, right?

There are many forms of cleansing.  I chose the raw food way.  It took about three months.  Eating living food for three months, I believe, totally cleaned out any leftover waste product that was in my colon.  It also cleans out the emotional “crap” in your body.  Again, the body needs the rest from digestion in order to start the healing process.  Toxins like undigested food, left in the body, will start to look for something to feed off of.  These toxins also give off waste product of their own, and cancer cells in your body will feed off this waste product.

There are many varieties of cleansing from dietary restriction to supplements.  Herbs and supplements can speed up the process of detox.  You can also buy products that are for specific areas of the body, such as the colon, liver or kidneys.  You can use teas, drops, pills or liquid for your cleanse.  Wheatgrass juice is intended for rapid detoxification and well as general health.  It is a living food.  It will immediately go to where it is needed in the body.  When I did my wheatgrass cleanse, I expelled mucous that was the color and scent of a common household cleaner.  I have a cleaning business and was inhaling way too much of this product over a ten year span.  Cleansing can also reduce and eliminate cravings from food to tobacco.  It can help with weight loss, increase your energy and alleviate some chronic diseases.

I’ve seen in my reading, many medical doctors saying that cleansing is totally unnecessary because the human body can maintain itself.  I certainly would’ve agreed to that a long time ago.  However, now humans smoke, drink, abuse drugs and take in more processed and genetically engineered food than ever before.  Faster is better.  The faster chickens grow…..the faster tomatoes grow….well you know the rest.

So back to can the body heal itself? Absolutely, that is what it is intended to do!  But not if we continue to abuse it.  A cleanse is the perfect way to give your body a break.  Taking out processed foods, sugars, caffeine and alcohol are just for starters.  Does that mean you can never have a drink or eat a cookie?  Of course not, everything in moderation…..harmony.  Start to wonder.  What is it that you need?  What could be building up inside of you?  Are you attached to it?  Are you ready to release and start healing today?

Today, I wish you release of the physical as well as the emotional stuff that is holding you back from total health.

As always, please consult your primary health care physician if you suffer from any serious medical condition.  These statements are for informational purposes only.

What My Cat Taught Me About Infections

0 Comments. Add your own comment!

Men in the audience, feel free to take a walk for this blog.  I won’t be insulted.  ; )

My male cat recently came down with a urinary tract infection (UTI).  My Vet tells me it’s not so much what he’s been eating, but what he hasn’t been getting in his diet.  Where have I heard that before?  Oh right, I said that.  I have been feeding him too much of the canned, tasty variety of food.  Even though I buy organic and so-called “healthy” for him, it’s not enough.  The Vet says it’s very common for male cats to suddenly come down with this problem after having no issues at all for many years. Some of you may already know this about your cat.  I will continue with his dry food and of course I’ll supplement with wheatgrass juice. Fortunately he loves to sit still while I give him dropper full doses of the sweet, green stuff.  It’s as much about what I am taking out as what I am going to add to his diet.  Unfortunately I waited too long to realize this.  Sometimes we wait until there is a problem before we come up with a solution.

Bladder, urinary tract, yeast (candida), and mild vaginal infections such as BV or vaginitis, are very common in women.  More so than we like to admit.  “Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common vaginal infection of women of childbearing age”, says the CDC.  When I was first diagnosed with BV, I was confused. The doctor told me the cause was from the following: having sex with a new partner, having multiple partners and douching.  I’m pretty sure none of you know me, but you do know that I am one person who tells the truth and I am not embarrassed about any said truths, but NONE of these so-called “causes” fit me.  I kept trying to tell my GYN this and she gave me that look that said she most certainly did not believe me.  How about stress or sugar, can’t these cause this problem?  The CDC states that BV is a “condition in women where the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted and replaced by an overgrowth of certain bacteria.  It is sometimes accompanied by discharge, odor, pain, itching, or burning”.  Although most women live with this condition without any of the annoying symptoms, sometimes there is an outbreak and I am convinced stress can cause it.  I again found myself suffering from some annoying symptoms.  I kept saying this happened to my cat because he was feeling the stress of the household (I am in the process of closing my 20 year business and moving to a different state).  The stress was too much for both of us.  So what now?  I knew I wasn’t going back to that doctor and I certainly wasn’t going to take an antibiotic or any other allopathic treatment when I know these only increase the risk of a yeast infection.

How to get the good bacteria back and decrease the harmful bacteria?  First I needed to find out some of the real causes of BV, and stop feeling guilty for the judgment that one doctor put upon me.  There’s so much guilt we, as women, put upon ourselves.  Time to stop.  Other causes of BV include stress, refined sugars and menopausal women, however researchers admit there is difficulty in determining exactly what causes BV.  In most cases it is the combination of germs and other factors that cause this problem.   We need to focus on rebalancing the normal vaginal flora.  The imbalance is caused by the bacterium lactobacilli, which is responsible for keeping a healthy and normal balance of microorganisms in your vagina.  E. coli can also reach the vaginal area from wiping the wrong way.  If you’ve reached menopause or are diabetic or your body resistance is low due to certain reasons (STRESS), you’d be at greater risk.  THANK YOU!  Finally some other answers!  This infection can be contracted through sexual intercourse and African-American women with single partners have a higher prevalence of this infection.  Here are some natural treatments I found.  These treatments should be started at the first sign of infection since waiting can increase your risk for pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis, cervicitis and pregnancy complications.

1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to 1 pint of water.  Douche up to twice a day (this is the one time when douching is considered ok).

Yogurt: Lactobacillus acidophilus and L. bifidus are present in yogurt. Look “for live culture” on the label and stay away from the fruited varieties, too much sugar.  Plain yogurt can be taken orally or tampon soaked and inserted vaginally overnight.

Probiotics- Acidophillus capsules can be taken orally or inserted vaginally.  Sepia, a homeopathic treatment, helps with pressure and burning.  Tea tree oil (antimicrobial properties) suppositories, douching, soaked tampons and wiping with a solution of tea tree oil and water can help along with topical and oral applications of vitamin E.

Foods to avoid: foods that yeast organisms thrive on like cheese, soy sauce, sugar, fruits, chocolate, alcohol and refined carbohydrates.

Foods to have on hand: Cranberry juice, goldenseal, garlic (nature’s antibiotic), plain yogurt, water and apple cider vinegar.

You never know who can teach you about your body.  Stay alert.  Do your research.  There’s so much out there to learn. Ask questions and don’t let anyone allow you to not trust your intuition.  I’ve been testing my pH levels every few days.  They are in the low to normal range.  The testing gives me incentive to keep eating right and taking my supplements.  Sometimes our bodies just can’t do it all alone.

I almost forgot about Louise Hay. She says this about female problems: Denial of the self.  Rejecting feminity.  Rejection of the feminine principle.

How about tapping to this “choice statement” from Louise…”I rejoice in my femaleness.  I love being a woman.  I love my body.”

These suggestions should not take the place of your veterinary or medical health professional.  It is important to diagnose what type of vaginitis you have before starting any form of treatment.

Heal Canker Sores Naturally

0 Comments. Add your own comment!

I just realized that I haven’t had a canker sore since I started my raw food lifestyle almost three years ago!  One of the big benefits of eating more living food is that your body chemistry becomes balanced in minerals, acidity, and alkalinity.  (You can do a self-test to determine whether your body fluids are either too acidic or too alkaline by following the test in the book, Prescription For Nutritional Healing on pg. 65).

What else causes canker sores?  Canker sores can be brought on by fatigue, stress, fever, menstrual cycles, nutritional deficiencies and sensitivity to certain foods.  They can be small, or large as a quarter with a red border and white center.  A well balanced, nutritious diet is vital.  As I said previously, I was a vegetarian and eating healthy, I thought, but still getting canker sores.  Once I turned to a living food lifestyle, not only did canker sores disappear, but allergies, stomach aches and headaches also diminished.  Some foods that contribute to canker sores are cherries, chocolate, citrus fruits, nuts, tomato products and animal protein, which produces excess body acid.  When you have an outbreak, eating a bland diet with no acidic fruit, salty or spicy foods, or sugary foods should lessen the discomfort.  Plain yogurt is helpful or taking acidophilus tablets.

Studies showed that some canker sore sufferers were deficient in iron and B vitamins.  These two seem to be deficient in many people.  Vitamin E applied directly to the sore can lessen its duration.  Using baking soda or table salt on the canker sore will temporarily relieve pain.  I tried this many times and it didn’t work for me.  Reducing acidic beverages like orange juice always helped me, and reducing stress in your life….that’s another common cause of many of the dis-ease in the body.  Try yoga, meditation, any form of exercise where you can shut off the mind and go into the body to feel, is great for stress reduction.

Some folk remedies for you.  Aloe vera gel, moist tea bag (red raspberry, sage, chamomile, goldenseal, or strawberry), antacid tablet or a swish of milk of magnesia in the mouth may reduce the inflammation and garlic capsules act as a natural antibiotic.

Here’s what Louise Hay says about canker sores in her book Heal Your Body….Festering words held back by the lips. Blame.  A mantra to help you?  I create only joyful experiences in my loving world.

Take what resonates with you.  Assimilate it into your life and eliminate the rest.

Experiment with what works for you.  Be proactive about your health and well being.

Sores that last more than 3 weeks should be evaluated by your physician.  This information should not take the place of your primary doctor.

Sick of the Same Old Fruit?

0 Comments. Add your own comment!

Bored with bananas?  Aggravated with apples?  Grumbling about grapes?  Me too. But if you’re like me you discipline yourself to stay healthy.  Is it any wonder most people have trouble sticking with a healthy diet?  Well I have some hope for you my friends.  Below are some alternatives to the old fruit standards to rejuvenate your palate while maintaining your healthy lifestyle.

What was Beethoven’s favorite fruit? Banananaaaas!  (That joke is better told out loud where the punch line can be sung to the tune of Beethoven’s 5th.)  But, I think even he would get sick of them after a while… although in truth I’m not sure how plentiful bananas were in 19th century Germany.  Anyway, bananas are not only a staple in every blended smoothie but essential for the maintenance of good blood pressure.  Nonetheless too many bananas can make anyone go “blah!”.  As an alternative, try fresh figs (no not in your smoothie).    Six fresh figs have 891 mg of blood pressure-lowering potassium, nearly 20% of your daily need — about double what you’d find in one large banana. In a recent 5-year study from the Netherlands, high-potassium diets were linked with lower rates of death from all causes in healthy adults age 55 and older.  Figs are also one of the best fruit sources of calcium, with nearly as much per serving as ½ cup of fat-free milk! You’re bones will love you for it.

Interested in fighting disease and protecting your heart but gagging on grapes?  Try lychee.  A French study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that lychee has the second-highest level of heart-healthy polyphenols of all fruits tested — nearly 15% more than the amount found in grapes. The compounds may also play an important role in the prevention of degenerative diseases such as cancer. “Polyphenols act like a force field, helping to repel foreign invaders from damaging your cells,” says David Grotto, RD, author of 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life!  As well, a recent test-tube and animal study from Sichuan University in China found that lychee may help to prevent the formation of breast cancer cells, thanks to the fruit’s powerful antioxidant activity.

Everyone wants great skin but who could eat so many oranges.  Not me, so I maintain my glow with guava.  One cup of guava has nearly five times as much skin-healing vitamin C (it’s a key ingredient in collagen production) as a medium orange (377 mg versus 83 mg) — that’s more than five times your daily need. Women who eat a lot of vitamin C-packed foods have fewer wrinkles than women who don’t eat many, according to a recent study that tracked the diets of more than 4,000 American women ages 40 to 74.  Guava can also protect against foodborne pathogens such as Listeria and Staph, according to research by microbiologists in Bangladesh. As well, a cooperative study by the USDA and Thai scientists found that guava has as much antioxidant activity as some well-known superfoods like blueberries and broccoli.

Apples are great at lowering cholesterol but terrible if you want to stay in the Garden of Eden.  So why not avoid the snake and eat asian pears.  One large Asian pear has nearly 10g of cholesterol-lowering fiber, about 40% of your daily need; a large apple has about half that much. People who ate the most fiber had the lowest total and “bad” cholesterol levels, according to a recent study of Baltimore adults.  The same researchers found that people who ate the most fiber also weighed the least and had the lowest body mass index and waist circumference.

Now I don’t want cancer but I also don’t want any more watermelon for crying out loud.  Now papaya’s have a weird seed thing going on too but it’s still one of the top sources of beta-crypoxanthin, which research suggests can protect against lung cancer. Like watermelon, it is also a rich source of lycopene which, research shows, protects against several different types of cancer, including stomach, endometrial, and prostate.  Papayas also promote healing.  When used topically it may help speed burn recovery thanks partly to the enzyme papain, which also aids in digestion. “Papain helps break down amino acids, the building blocks of protein,” says Elisa Zied, RD, an American Dietetic Association spokesperson.

So there you have it, variety in the world of fruit mundanity.  Remember, most of these alternatives can also be juiced or blended so there’s no more excuses.

Be Well,

Juicy Josh

Guest Blog Post by Michael Bergonzi - The Wheatgrass King at Hippocrates Health Institute!

1 Comment. Add your own comment!

Ok…so first of all, how awesome is it that Michael was up to do a guest blog post?!  Michael is an incredible guy, and I can’t give him more authority in his knowledge on the subject of wheatgrass, leafy greens, and all that has to do with juice.  Bottom line is - he knows his stuff.  He has just come out with a new DVD with a great (hilarious) lecture on the background of wheatgrass, how to grow it and how to actually juice it!

Ok Mike…heres..well, the mic!

From Michael Bergonzi:

Hello 877MyJuicer world!  Michael from Hippocrates here.  It would be my pleasure to inform people of GREENS and how amazing they are!

First of all, allow myself…to …introduce….myself.  My name is Michael Bergonzi, Greenhouse / Expo Manager / Health Educator Director at Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach, FL for the past seven years.  My career in the field of alternative health & wheatgrass began in San Diego, CA at the Optimum Health Institute back in 1990.  Growing grass for a living and not ending up in jail seemed like a pretty cool job!  Ok, I’ll take it!  Of course, the cost per one ounce is $1.00 rather than $350.00!  =)   Humor is important to healing!  I spent 8 years there, then worked for Ellen Tart-Jensen and Singer / Songwriter, Jewel for the next 3 years.  Getting out of the grass field (no pun intended) but staying in the alternative Health Industry as Ellen spent 11 years with Bernard Jensen, so it was an awesome ride.  In 2001, I came to Hippocrates in FL, the number one Alternative Health Resort in the Country.

Most people now a days have at least heard of wheatgrass juice if not actually tasted it themselves from a juice bar or health food store.  (There are always some people that enjoy drinking it, but no one ever hangs around those people!)  The taste of wheatgrass is not always a pleasant one and we are told that it must be our bodies that are detoxing.  However, that is not always the case.  For example, as a wheatgrass grower, I would bring a tray of grass to the health food store, ready to juice.  If they juiced it that day, it would not taste at all bitter or cause that nausea feeling.  But, they choose instead to put it in the store window for a display for people to see it, and now it stays in the window for two more days in which the sun shines on it, which it should never.  They haven’t watered it, which they should everyday, and now, that same sweet tasting wheatgrass has aged almost 80 years in two days.  It’s kind of like people, the older it gets, the more bitter it becomes!  =)  Wheatgrass should be harvested when a second blade becomes visible, and then the entire tray needs to be cut at the same time.  It may then be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week without losing it’s value and taste.

Let’s talk about the ‘greens’ on the planet Earth.  First of all, everyone can agree that we, as humans, are mammals.  Most of the mammals on this planet are living on leafy greens.  In fact, we are one of the few mammals that still eat meat and the only mammal that cook our food.  To say that protein only comes from eating meat is an uneducated statement.  Sprouts, sprouted beans and GREENS are the best source of proteins for our bodies.  Think about it on a bigger scale.  How is it possible that most every mammal (and you all agreed that WE humans are mammals) can live on eating just leafy greens?  Elk, moose, deer, giraffes, gorillas, elephants, horses, etc… and don’t forget the one that WE get most of our food here in the USA from, the COW!!!  Ahhhhhhh…  and here is the problem now a days.  You see, in the past, when you lived on red meat and dairy products, in-directly you lived on GRASS.  The cow was eating the grass; we were eating the cow.  It just makes sense.  We were getting the EARTH in our diets.  But, today, that is NOT the case.  Most cows are now trough fed, mostly grains, which are making their systems too acid base, and are having to be shot full of antibiotics, steroids and of course hormones.  They go over to the trough, eat as much as they can, and now want to take a nap because they are ‘full.’  (Ringing true to us as humans these days who drive through the fast food joint, meaning WE are being trough fed too!  Staying full, getting tired and staying sick.)  A cow taking a nap because it’s too full?  Are you kidding me?  So, the problem now is our red meat and dairy aren’t what they used to be.  We are not getting the GRASS (green / earth) in our diet any longer.  Look, I have been in this field now for 17 years, too long to judge anyone for what they choose to eat.  I just want to educate people on “what’s simple is TRUE.”  Get the Earth back in your diet, more oxygen back into your cells and exercise once a day.  (yoga, walking, stretching, etc…)

OK.  Is any of this making sense yet?  Let’s go to the first thing your body needs to live.  Before food, before water, you need OXYGEN!!!  Everyone reading this, please pause for a moment and take a DEEP BREATH…  Count to three on the inhale and three on the exhale.  Wasn’t that good?  Let’s face it, the only people that really focus on breath these days, unless you’re into yoga, thai-chi or meditation, are smokers!  =(   Personally, I smoked for 10 years, and I know why I felt the ‘need’ for a cigarette, because it would relax me.  Exactly, what are you doing when you smoke?  (You now have to leave your job and go outside the building.  Amen to that law, so you get a bit of stress relief too.)  You’re BREATHING DEEP, for the first time all day.  I am NOT encouraging smoking, however, I am encouraging breathing.  Try it without the “stick.”  Walk away from people, your job, etc… and go somewhere, by yourself, and spend 5 minutes breathing deep.  It’s amazing how much calmer you will be after doing this.

Now, let’s take a moment and go back to how ‘wheat’ grass came to light.  A woman by the name of Ann Wigmore founded Hippocrates in Boston approx. 50 years ago.  She actually healed her own health issues by chewing on ‘lawn’ grass.  That’s right; I said lawn grass, not wheatgrass.  She began chewing on it and got sick for many weeks, but stayed with it till she eventually started feeling better and better.  She learned that the grass / greens were the most complete foods on the planet, as well as having other healing properties.  The wheat seed was chosen because of its sweeter, more palatable taste.  (Her cat picked it out.)  She also learned that the green / chlorophyll will increase the hemoglobin in the blood which then distributes oxygen to every cell in our body.  Take another deep breath!  Remember that oxygen is a good thing?  Ann started this because of watching the animals do it, as well as a statement that was made to her as a child, “Instinct guided creatures, left to them selves, do not make mistakes.”  (I LOVE that one.)  Most of us chewed on grass as children, if it was around.  Why then and not now?  We lost sight of our instinct.  Here’s a FYI on oxygen content on the planet these days:  100 years ago, there was over 30% and now it is at an average of 15%.  The most out there, if you live in a lush, green area, is 21%.  However, in downtown major cities it is down to 9% or less.  Does anyone remember ‘smog alerts’?  I do, but not since 1990, when they stopped telling people.  Fact:  Oxygen in the cells means less chance for cancer to survive.  GREENS = Chlorophyll = increased hemoglobin = more OXYGEN in your cells.  GET IT NOW?  Don’t forget, fresh wheatgrass juice is the best way to FEEL a difference.  Drinking 2 ounces / day on an empty stomach is optimum.

In closing, remember these two simple words: “Stay Present.”  If you liked my words and enjoyed the ‘Wheatgrass Growing’ and ‘Sprouting Seeds’ DVDs, then I have my very special DVD, ‘Conscious Communication’ available now as well as my new class called ‘Moving Beyond Fear’ on audio CD, both are my very favorite to teach.  There is much more to this life and even faster ways to heal the body when you are open to receiving the information.  Yours in the greenhouse at Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach, FL, breathing in approx. 30% oxygen everyday, Michael Bergonzi

For questions on growing your own wheatgrass or sprouts, visit my personal website (which I am still working on improving) at www.hippocratesgreenhouse.com and send me an email anytime.  My email address in on my website.  I am also available for lectures and travel to help start up the wheatgrass business in your area.

The Low Down on Juice Fasting - “Fasting, it’s not just for Yom Kippur anymore.”

0 Comments. Add your own comment!

The holiest day of the Jewish year is Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement; a day spent in prayer, penance and among other things, fasting. How grueling it was to me as a child. Of course I rarely made it through and the few times I did I would break fast (no not “breakfast” spellcheck) with something like a cheeseburger and a milkshake. Nowadays it’s become popular for people feeling a bit guilty about their sinful diet to do a little atoning of their own with a variety of juice fasts. Maybe my ancient ancestors were on to something.

Anyway, this fasting is a risky business and really not necessary for those with a healthy diet already. Nonetheless, the benefits are compelling. In addition to getting rid of toxins built up throughout the system from a poor diet it can decrease congestive symptoms; eliminate food allergies and sensitivities; reduces the burden on the digestive system, allowing it to heal; release pesticides, drugs, and other chemicals from stored fat, which can then be eliminated; enhance mental, physical, and spiritual well-being; increase energy and mental clarity; promote glowing skin; prevent chronic diseases caused by poor diet and lifestyle; and clear mucus discharge.

A juice fast is just what it says; a short-term intake of raw vegetable and fruit juice and water ONLY. This is done because juice is an incredible source of vitamins and antioxidants. Fasts typically last for one to three days but some people go longer. I wouldn’t recommend that without some type of medical supervision and monitoring to ensure that nutrient deficiencies don’t result.

So here’s a basic outline of a fast although many variations are possible. Do your research and find one that’s right for you. It’s suggested to fast during the warmer months with Spring being the best time of the year for juice fasting. For seven or more days before the fast, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, sugar, dairy, wheat, animal meat, fish, and eggs should be reduced or eliminated from the diet. During this time eat mainly organic fruits, vegetables, and beans. During the fast between 32 and 64 ounces of juice is recommended and should be sipped throughout the day. Typical fruits and vegetables include celery, carrot, kale, cabbage, apple, pineapple, cranberry, spinach, beet, and greens. Citrus fruits are often avoided. In addition to the juice roughly 6 glasses of room temperature or warm filtered water is recommended. GO ORGANIC! And if you absolutely, positively cannot, peel the skin off the fruits and vegetables or wash them with a non-toxic produce cleaner like the Cuisine Clean. Fresh juice is a must so the best alternative to juicing at home with a centrifugal juicer and masticating juicer is to buy it from the health food store. Be sure not to skimp on the wheatgrass, green vegetables and sprouts because they contain the chlorophyll, which is especially beneficial during a juice fast. These must be juiced in a masticating juicer. Be sure to combine both fruits and vegetables as they each have their own unique benefits and finally, when you break the fast, return to solid foods gradually.

Certain fruits and vegetables and their parts should not be juiced, like the pits of peaches, apricots, cherries, and other fruits, apple seeds, citrus peels, carrot and rhubarb tops, tough skins (such as kiwi, pineapple, mangoes), and bananas and avocados. Some people can’t handle complete abstinence from solid food so it’s ok if you eat one meal a day in addition to the juice.

Pay attention to your body while you fast. Keep an eye on your weight, symptoms and degree of congestion, tongue coating, degree of hunger, and energy level. If energy level drops for more than one day, if weight becomes too low, or if any symptoms become particularly intense, just break the fast for God’s sake. This isn’t a punishment after all. Please note that a certain amount of tongue coating is normal. It may become thicker or have a more pronounced color (yellow, white, grey) as the body eliminates toxins.

Certain people should not do this. Pregnant or nursing women or children shouldn’t try a juice fast. As well, people with diabetes, low blood sugar, eating disorders, kidney disease, liver disease, malnutrition, addictions, underweight, anemia, impaired immune function, infection, nutritional deficiency, low blood pressure, ulcerative colitis, cancer, terminal illness, epilepsy, or other chronic conditions shouldn’t try a juice fast or should do so only under strict medical supervision. People shouldn’t try a juice fast before or after surgical procedures. Remember, a juice fast can reduce blood proteins and change the way prescription drugs react in the body so people taking prescription medications should consult a health professional skilled in detoxification before trying a juice fast, and should never discontinue or reduce their medications on their own.

Be well,

Detox with Juice - Juice Fasting Might be Your Answer!

0 Comments. Add your own comment!

Now that you’ve researched juicers, read up on organic fruits and vegetables and (hopefully) purchased your very first juicer, you might be asking yourself; just exactly what can I do with this new appliance? Do you make a smoothie, throw a juicing party or do you try out one of the expected juice fasts you’ve heard so much about from your friends and legions of committed juicers? If you decide a juice fast, just might be the answer, you may want to start with understanding the basics of juicing for detoxification.

WHY DETOX?

First of all, many doctors, naturopaths, nutritionists and juicers consider detoxification an important corrective and restorative process in our cycle of nutrition. It is a time when we allow our cells and organs the chance to clear out waste and take in new oxygen and nutrients. While we do not necessarily need to fast to experience some cleansing, (minor shifts in the diet such as including more fluids and more raw foods will encourage detoxification), juice fasting is an advanced detox method designed to speed the elimination of toxins from the body. Freshly juiced fruits and vegetables provide calories and nutrients on which to function and build new cells, and also provide vital enzymes.

Juice fasting essentially refers to the avoidance of solid foods and the consumption only of liquids. Water fasting is popular, but juice is often chosen over water as a way of fasting because of its many benefits. Juice requires minimal digestion, improves energy, is easily absorbed and assimilated by the body and it supplies nutrients and calories to maintain energy, while it stimulates our body to clear waste. Fasting also increases the release of toxins from the colon, kidneys and bladder, lungs and sinuses, and skin. While this process may generate discharge such as mucus from the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, sinuses, or in the urine, it is helpful in clearing out the problems that have arisen from overeating and a sedentary lifestyle.

BEFORE YOU DETOX

Since we are all different from age to body type to health conditions, it is recommended that you consult your primary care provider before trying a juice fast for detox. Fasting can reduce blood proteins and change the way prescription drugs react in the body. If you are taking prescription medication make certain to consult a health professional skilled in detoxification.

Moreover, if you have one of the following conditions do not try juice fasting: diabetes, hypoglycemia, eating disorders, anemia, epilepsy, kidney disease, impaired or weak immune system, cardiac arrhythmias, weak heart, candida, cancer, peptic ulcer, malnutrition, pregnancy, nursing, gout, lactation, asthma, terminal illness, tuberculosis, ulcerative colitis, any condition that causes depletion and weakness, underweight, chronic infection, nutritional deficiency, low blood pressure, epilepsy.

JUICING GUIDELINES

Once you’ve received the go-ahead and are ready to begin your juice detox, it is best to start slowly and to avoid being excessive or impatient. Make sure to get good nights sleep and follow some of these practical tips:

Begin slowly with a three or five day juice fast and graduate to a longer fast from there.

The basic procedure is to use between one and three parts distilled or filtered water to one part fresh juice. Between 32 and 64 oz. of juice is usually recommended per day. The juice is sipped throughout the day. Approximately 6 glasses of filtered water should be consumed (including the water used to dilute the juice) to flush out toxic substances.

· Low-allergen protein supplements can be added after the third day. They provide protein, vitamins, and minerals to support the detoxification process. The powder can be mixed into juices.

· Keep warm. Nurturing and relaxing are important during this time. Breathing exercises, yoga and/or meditation are some optional suggestions.

· Add blue-green algae, spirulina, or chlorella to juices to provide more energy.

· Be sure to drink plenty of warm water in addition to juices..

· Good choices for detox are celery, carrot, kale, cabbage, apple, pineapple, cranberry, spinach, beet, and greens.

· Apples, grapes, oranges, and carrots are caloric and should be minimized if weight loss is desired while grapefruit, lemon, cucumber, and greens, such as lettuce, spinach, or parsley, are recommended for weight loss.

34. According to Dr. Birscher, nature uses chlorophyll (wheatgrass) as a body cleanser, rebuilder, and neutralizer of toxins.
35. Wheatgrass juice can dissolve the scars that are formed in the lungs from breathing acid gasses. The effect of carbon monoxide is minimized since chlorophyll increases hemoglobin production.
36. Wheatgrass juice reduces high blood pressure and enhances the capillaries.
37. Wheatgrass juice can remove heavy metals from the body

Frequently Asked Questions about Wheatgrass:

What is Chlorophyll?

Chlorophyll, which makes up over 70% of the solid content of wheatgrass juice is the basis of all plant life. Chlorophyll is often referred to as “the blood of plant life.” It closely resembles the molecules of human red blood cells.

How is Chlorophyll related to the human blood?

Both Chlorophyll and Hemoglobin share a similar atom structure to create their respective molecules, as shown below. The only actual difference in the two molecules is that of the metallic atom element. In human blood or hemoglobin consists of iron, while in Chlorophyll the metallic atom is magnesium.

What is the importance of Chlorophyll in blood?

Since Chlorophyll and Hemoglobin are so much alike in atom structure it allows it to be absorbed quickly and begin to build the blood stream.

What are enzymes?

Enzymes in laymen terms are like highly skilled workers on an assembly line. Each enzyme performs a specific function within the body while in harmony with other enzymes. They are important and required for everything we do, vision, thought, dreams, reproduction, breathing, digestion are all controlled by enzymes.

Why are enzymes so essential to good health?

With the important role of enzymes involvement in every body function, it is necessary that we intake adequate enzymes on a daily basis. Unfortunately, medical doctors have found that we don’t get all the enzymes we need from our cooked, over salted and over processed foods. This results in overall poor health situations. Wheatgrass juice can provide the additional enzyme intake your body requires for overall good health.

Is it true that enzymes aide in the prevention and curing of cancer?

Enzymes in short deter the cancer cells ability to hide from the immune system and spread throughout the body. It is not “medically proven” that wheatgrass can cure cancer - but Ann Wigmore associated her recover with wheatgrass.

What is the nutritional value of wheatgrass juice?

One ounce of Wheatgrass Juice provides the following:

· Equivalent in vitamins, minerals and amino acids found in 2.5 pounds of green leaf vegetables

· Rich source of Vitamins A, B Complex, B-17, C, E and K

· Excellent source of Calcium, Potassium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Sodium, Sulfur, Cobalt, Zinc and 17 forms of amino acids and enzymes.

What are the benefits of wheatgrass juice consumption?

As a body cleanser Wheatgrass juice is a powerful cleanser and may start an immediate reaction with toxins & mucus in the stomach, possibly causing nausea. Chlorophyll brings toxins into the bloodstream that have been stored in cells or in fatty tissue. Start with 1 to 2 ounces and work up to more slowly. Drink it on an empty stomach.

As a body builder Wheatgrass juice is very high in enzymes & chlorophyll. It contains up to 70% chlorophyll, which is an important blood builder. The chlorophyll molecule closely resembles that of the hemin molecule, the pigment that combines with protein to form hemoglobin. The major difference is that the chlorophyll molecule contains magnesium as its central atom, and the hemin molecule contains iron. The molecular structure of these two substances is almost identical in every other respect.

As an energizer & appetite suppressant, the starch of the wheat berry is stored energy that when converted to simpler sugar is a quick energy source. It is especially good for athletes because it is a juice and is absorbed in 20 minutes. Wheat picks up 92 of the 102 minerals in the soil and contains all vitamins that science has isolated. Because 1 ounce of juice equals 2 pounds of produce nutritionally, it naturally shuts off the appetite in the brain.

As an antibiotic Science has proven that chlorophyll will arrest growth and development of unfriendly bacteria. It acts to produce an unfavorable environment for bacteria growth, rather than by any direct action upon bacteria themselves. Rapp and Gurney at Loyola University established that water-soluble chlorophyll inhibits the action of proteolitic bacteria (which break down protein into simpler substances) and enzymes; hence, taken internally via mouth or rectum, it inhibits purification of protein by some bacteria that are commonly found in the digestive tract of meat eaters.

And carcinogens. Dr. Chiu-nan Lai, Ph.D., (University of Texas System Cancer Center, Department of Biology, Houston, Texas) has determined through using the Ames Bacterial Mutagenicity Test that chlorophyll is the active factor in wheat sprout extract that inhibits the metabolic activity of carcinogens. A twenty-year study of 2000 telephone company workers has found that a natural ingredient in carrots and leafy green vegetables significantly reduced the risk of lung cancer in cigarette smokers. They determined that a diet high in beta-carotene negated the bad effects of 30 years of smoking. The National Cancer Institute reports that 19 of 21 studies over the years have indicated diets high in beta-carotene contribute to at least 40% risk reduction in developing some kinds of cancer.

For anemia Chlorophyll (wheatgrass) aids in rebuilding the bloodstream. Studies on various animals have shown chlorophyll to be free of any toxic reaction. The red cell count has returned to normal within 4 to 5 days of the administration of chlorophyll, even in those animals that were known to be extremely anemic or low in red blood cell count.

As a deodorizer Dr. F. Howard Wescott reported that when chlorophyll is taken internally in adequate quantity, it reduces or eliminates offensive body and breath odors. His studies showed it effective in neutralizing obnoxious odors in the body from food, beverages, tobacco, and metabolic changes (halitosis), and from perspiration due to physical exercise, nervousness, menstrual cycle, etc. skin disorders
The bland, soothing effect of chlorophyll (wheatgrass) ointments are very beneficial in treating various skin diseases including weeping & dry eczema, insect bites, infection, and first and second - degree burns.

How to grow wheatgrass:

What do I need?

A sprouter!  Check out our wheatgrass sprouters that we carry

How long does it take to grow?

Approximately 8-12 days (longer in cold weather)

What kind of seed should you use?

Use Hard Winter Wheat Seed (wheatberries)

How often do you water the grass?

Once a day heavily (until the tray drips)

How long do you soak the seeds before planting?

8-12 hours or overnight

Will the grass grow back the second time?

The second growth will grow, but at a loss of 50% of the nutritional value

How much light does it need?

Indirect sunlight - very little!

What about frozen or powdered grass?

These are good alternatives, but no substitute for fresh juice

What kind of soil should I use?

Benefits of Vitamin K and How to Get It! “Who put the ‘K’ in Vitamin?”

0 Comments. Add your own comment!

I just love imagining the expression of profound “Huh?” on your face. (Or maybe I just overestimate my cleverness) Anyway, what I’m talkin bout Willis is Vitamin K; that amazing “koagulating” substance essential for healing our wounds. Now I’m no dummy—at least that’s what my mother tells me—but “koagulation” is the way our Danish friend Henrik Dam, the researcher who discovered the stuff spelled it, and that’s what put the “K” in Vitamin. Now for years scientists have believed that coagulation (see I can spell it) seemed to be the only boon of this baby but recent discoveries have shown that in fact Vitamin K plays other crucial roles in the body which means possibly the assessment of our recommended optimal daily intake should be reassessed.

So why is it essential? Basically, the body uses Vitamin K to produce a range of different proteins. Some are used to produce factors that allow blood to coagulate while other vitamin K-dependent proteins are used for maintaining healthy bones and keeping arteries unclogged. Sarah L. Booth, Ph.D., a scientist at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University and one of a small group of vitamin K nutrition experts in the world says that “Vitamin K allows a protein called osteocalcin to bind to calcium in bone, which helps maintain bone density.” In a separate 10-year long study of 72,000 women, researchers found that those who consumed the most foods containing vitamin K had a 30 percent lower risk of hip fractures than those whose diets contained the least vitamin K. There’s also evidence showing that other vitamin K-dependent proteins may have a role in preventing hardening of the arteries, which constricts blood flow and can trigger heart attacks.

Currently the recommended daily intake of vitamin K based on the levels that are needed to maintain normal coagulation is 90 micrograms for women and 120 for men but considering the new evidence, experts suspect that the most effective level may be higher. The problem? In the words of Dr. Booth, “At the moment, we don’t have the data to say exactly what optimal intake should be.”

Now don’t panic! Vitamin K deficiency is extremely uncommon so just get a hold of yourself. The main dietary sources of vitamin K are dark green vegetables, so just eat as many salads and drink as much fresh juice as you can and you’ll probably be alright. Now vitamin K is also abundant in many vegetable oils, including soybean, canola, and olive oil but always remember that leafy green vegetables of all kinds contain vitamin K. From spinach, kale, and green leaf lettuce to broccoli, asparagus and arugula, there are plenty of sources of vitamin K but a good rule of thumb is the greener the leaf, the more vitamin K it contains. Now remember you’ll need a masticating juicer for the leafy green veggies but almost nothing is lost in the juicing process so go to town.

Beginners Health - Positive Foods “Well I’ll Be, 8 Is Enough!”

2 Comments. Add your own comment!

Now I know this blog is for health nuts but I got to thinking (which can be dangerous)… What if, somehow, however inconceivably, someone found their way onto this blog whose interest in healthy living was marginal. I know, I know. It’s a kooky thought but this person could be you, reading right now. Maybe you find the writing humorous but aren’t really ready to go all out. Maybe having to keep track of the difference between a centrifugal and a masticating juicer and the benefits and reasoning behind each is a bit arduous. Maybe you don’t care all that much about the difference between juicing and blending or why one should dehydrate their food or grind their own grain. Maybe the how and why of it all is just a bit too much. Maybe you just want to keep it simple. After all isn’t simplicity crucial to a healthy lifestyle? I think so. Stress about diet as I’ve said again and again is just another stress and even those who think green can be neurotic about their lifestyle. So I thought possibly a little something about essentials would be appreciated. So here you have it; 8 essential foods to eat daily and a little bit about why.

1) Let’s start with spinach. Popeye was no dope however strange his musculature. Spinach builds bones, enhances eyesight and sexuality, grows muscle, and keeps your heart in tip top shape. It’s a rich source of plant-based omega-3s and folate, which decrease the risk of stroke, heart disease, and osteoporosis plus, folate increases blood flow to the penis. It’s also packed with lutein, a compound that fights age-related macular degeneration. It’s great in salads, cooked or juiced. Some worthy substitutes are Kale, bok choy or romaine lettuce.

2)  Let’s go from Popeye to Bugs and talk about my favorite veggie to juice, carrots. Now that’s what’s up Doc. Carrots are incredible cancer fighters which also enhance eyesight and boost immunity. It’s all about the carotenoids. These fat-soluble compounds are associated with reduction of a broad range of cancers, as well as reducing the risk and severity of inflammatory conditions such as asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. The best substitutes are sweet potato, pumpkin, butternut squash, yellow bell pepper or mango. Most red, yellow, and orange vegetables and fruits are spiked with carotenoids but none are as easy to prepare, or are as low calorie as carrots.

3). Yogurt—mmm mmm good! Now look my vegan buddies just let people do their thing. This 2000 year old food’s health benefits are undisputed. Like spinach, yogurt is a bone builder but it also fights cancer and boosts immunity. Fermentation spawns uncountable probiotic organisms that reinforce the millions of beneficial bacteria in your body. These boost the immune system and provide protection against cancer. Not all yogurts are probiotic so buy ones that read “live and active cultures” or better yet, make your own. Yogurt is also a great add to blended smoothies. For variety try kefir or soy yogurt.

3). “You say tomato, I say tomato”, wait… could those lyrics be written? Anyway, however you say it tomatoes are a beautiful and brilliant fruit (that’s right, scientifically speaking, tomatoes are a fruit people). They fight cancer keep your heart healthy and boost your immune system. Red ones are where it’s at because they’ve got more of the antioxidant lycopene, and it’s ok if they’re processed because it’s easier for the body to absorb the lycopene that way. Studies have shown that a lycopene rich diet can decrease the risk of bladder, lung, prostate, skin, and stomach cancers, as well as reduce the risk of coronary artery disease. Tomatoes can be eaten raw or juiced but aim for at least a full glass or eight red cherry tomatoes a day. Other lycopene rich foods are red watermelon, pink grapefruit, Japanese persimmon, papaya and guava.

4). Blueberries; the core of any good smoothie and possibly the most antioxidant food on the planet. Blueberries are a brain stimulant and are even called the “brain berry” because of their ability to help prevent age related memory loss. They’re also an incredible cancer fighter, they keep your heart healthy, prevent diabetes and boosts immunity. Blueberries are also rich in fiber and vitamins A and C and they are as potent frozen or dried as they are fresh. Açai berries are the new fad and are an adequate substitute but you can also try purple grapes, prunes, raisins or strawberries.

5) Beans, beans, good for your heart; the more you eat, the more you’re smart… (well they’re a brain stimulant too. What did you think I was going to say?) They also make you strong because they help promote muscle growth. Black Beans are the best by far because they’re filled with anthocyanins, an antioxidant compound that has been shown to improve brain function. Close seconds are pinto, kidney, fava, and lima beans as well as peas and lentils.

6) Sometimes you feel like a nut and sometimes you don’t but you should eat them anyway. Nuts, particularly walnuts promote muscle growth, stimulant your brain, fight cancer boost immunity and keep your heart strong. Walnuts are richer in omega-3s than salmon, they’re packed with more anti-inflammatory polyphenols than red wine and they’ve got as much muscle-building protein as chicken. Almonds, peanuts, pistachios, macadamia and hazelnuts are a close second but none really compare to the walnut.

7) Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey. A kiddley divey too but you shouldy doats. Lots of em. If this joke’s gone past you, google “Mairzy Doats” and understand that I’m talking about Oats. And I’m saying you should eat them, like the mares and does do… (Explaining jokes just ruins them huh?) Anyway, Oats are the last but certainly not least of the 8 essentials because they’re incredible for your heart, they stimulate your brain and they promote muscle growth. Why? Because they’re crammed with soluble fiber, which lowers the risk of heart disease and they’ve got 10 grams of protein per ½-cup serving so they deliver steady muscle-building energy. Quinoa, flaxseed and wild rice are great as well.

Wow… for a keep it simple article this sure turned into a long one.

Be Well,

Juicy Josh
