There are all kinds of things we can do to get healthy and stay in shape, including getting plenty of exercise and rest, and of course, eating a healthy, well-balanced diet. Often, we do not get all of the nutrition we need from our diets, for many reasons, including not having time to cook, or having to eat on the run. One good way to get plenty of nutrition quickly and easily is to have a healthy glass of wheatgrass juice, which is easy when you use the Healthy Juicer – Manual Wheatgrass Juicer by Lexen Products.

Easy to Use and Easy to Clean

The Healthy Juicer is not only a wheatgrass juicer. You can make all kinds of different delicious juice from many fruits and vegetables. This is great for people who do not like the taste of vegetables or wheatgrass, because these juices can be masked by the many tasty fruits you use to make your juices. Plus, when you combine fruits and vegetables, you are getting even more nutritional value. The Healthy Juicer is really easy to use, and instead of grinding the fruits and vegetables, it crushes them, to extract the most juice possible. There is less heat build-up with this juicer than with other juicers, so using the Healthy Juicer doesn’t destroy certain enzymes and other nutrients.

The Healthy Juicer – Manual Wheatgrass Juicer is also really easy to set up and clean. It only takes a couple of minutes to take the whole juicer apart, and the parts clean easily with a little bit of warm, soapy water. When you are juicing, all of the pulp and other waste is expelled, so the machine is not clogged up, making it more difficult to clean.

The Manual Wheatgrass Juicer Is Great for Traveling, Too

One of the best ways to kill a healthy diet is by going on vacation. Often, when we are away, we throw caution to the wind, and eat out the entire time. This is all right if you are eating healthy foods, but more often than not, the food we eat on vacation is not healthy, especially when we take advantage of low-priced meals at fast food restaurants, which a lot of us do while away. Whenever possible, it is a good idea to bring along your own food. It doesn’t take up much space to have a cooler with some healthy foods it in it, and of course, healthy, fresh juice. You can make sure that your juice is always fresh, even while on vacation, with the Healthy Juicer – Manual Wheatgrass Juicer. Because it is so portable and lightweight, this juicer can be taken with you just about anywhere. And, since it needs no electricity, this is the ideal juicer to take on camping trips, too.

Oh – here is more information on the juicer itself!

Healthy Juicer Electric – Multipurpose Wheatgrass, Fruit and Vegetable Juicer

NOW WITH A ***50-YEAR WARRANTY***!!

The Lexen Electric Healthy Juicer is the new standard in juice extractors. This is a powerful masticating type juicer that ‘crushes’ fruits and vegetables, including hard vegetables such as carrots. Since there is no heat generated as in other juicers, all of the enzymes are preserved for a fresh and ‘live’ tasting juice. The affordable price allows everyone to enjoy the incredible health benefits of juicing. More importantly the machine is made of quality parts which will last a lifetime. This is represented by its 8-Year Warranty on its motor and 1-Year Warranty on parts.

This machine has so many different functions than just a juicer! Making pasta, nut butters, healthy baby food, frozen desserts and being a soy milk maker make the price truly unbelievable.

The machine also includes TWO specially designed augers; one for wheatgrass and one for fruits and vegetables.

Another great point on this juicer is there is no internal screen! Just shake the juice cup, give it a few taps and the juice will continue to strain into the collection cup (included). If you like pulpy juice, just leave the screen off!

The machine is made of non-toxic polycarbonate plastic and a stainless steel drive shaft which is sure to last years upon years.

The Lexen Electric Healthy Juicer is made by the same great company who introduced the Manual Healthy Juicer wheatgrass juicer.

If you read the specifications of wheatgrass juicers, you might be confused by the term “masticating.” You might wonder exactly what that means. By definition, the term means to chew food or to grind to a pulp. The Omega 8006 is a masticating wheatgrass juicer that does more than make juice for you—it makes it really well. When you consider the benefits of a good juicer, the first thing you should look at is how well it does its main job.

Focusing on the Best

Sure, you can buy machines that are meant to make juice, yogurt and do other tasks. If you look around hard enough, you can find one that will do any number of jobs for you; but the more that a machine does, the less that it will do really well. On the other hand, a machine that only does one thing, for instance, juicing, has to do that one thing well or no one will continue to buy it. If you were told that you could have a mediocre machine that makes juices, milkshakes and crushes ice or you could have a great machine that makes phenomenal, healthy juices to improve your diet and your lifestyle, which would you really prefer? Do you really want your wheatgrass juicer to do fifteen other things?

Some people might let price be a factor here, saying that they are getting more by buying the machine that does more. But if that machine does not work as well as the better made machine that does less, did you really save any money? If you never use any of the other functions that you paid extra for, what are you saving? Sure, you might have that one-time need, but is it better to make do with something else or pay for something that you use one time during the life of the machine?

You also have to remember this: The more work that a machine is expected to do, the more working parts will be included on the machine. The more working parts, the more likely the machine is to break. Think about this: If one part breaks does that mean that the whole machine will be broken or will you still be able to use it for the other functions? In most cases, the answer to that is no. Once a machine is broken, that is it. It is broken.

Finding a good wheatgrass juicer is important, especially if you are interested in adding more fresh juices to your diet for good health. If you are pricing and comparing ready made juices, remember, you will have little control over what is added to them. Are you sure that the bottle you just bought is wheatgrass? Are you sure that it is actually fresh and still has all of its vital nutrients? What is the sense in buying and consuming something if you can make it your own way, in your own home, just seconds before you consume it? After all, how much fresher could it be?

It never fails. You want to drink fresh and healthy juice but when you go to use the juicer to make your favorite wheatgrass blend, you find that someone has forgotten to clean the juicer once again. That means that before you can make a glass of refreshing juice, you have to take the entire machine apart, clean it thoroughly and then put it all back together. By the time you are finished doing all of that, you will probably be less than interested in making any juice at all. It is time to consider what your best course of action is. You can either give that lecture about cleaning the juicer again, or you can choose to find a new juicer. If the latter sounds like the easiest route to take, there are several things you should consider.

Everyone knows that a juicer has to be effective in making juices from a number of different fruits and vegetables so the number one factor should be a powerful motor. From crunching up carrots and other tough foods, to fully juicing everything that is put into it, the juicer’s motor has to run hard and run well.

Another factor to consider for your new juicer choice is the number of parts. Is putting the thing together going to be an absolute nightmare every time you use it? Think of how often you use your juicer or how much you would use it if it were easier to use. The more parts that have to be taken off for cleaning, the more parts that will need to be put back on afterward. Finding a juicer that does not have a million loose parts is a very important factor to consider.

What do other people think about the juicer? Before you make a purchase, you should do research on the various available juicers, reading the reviews from people who bought the same model. A word of caution though: Make sure that you go to third party review sites before reading these reviews because if you only read glowing reviews posted on the juicer’s site, are you really getting the honest information that you need?

Price is a factor that should be considered, too. Setting a budget and sticking to it will prevent you from being mesmerized by accessories and attachments that you really do not need. During your research you will get a good idea of what a reasonable price range might be.

Finally, back to the cleaning of the juicer. Look for an easy-to-clean juicer that does not need to be broken down every time so that maybe the other people in your household will take a stab at cleaning the thing as well. The Omega VRT Vertical Juicer is a good option to consider, easy to clean, powerful, and reasonably priced. You do not have to take the whole thing apart to clean it. You simply run water through the hopper after you have juiced your foods and that’s it.

Food Dehydrators – How They Work, and Why Every Home Should Have One

A really handy form of food to have around is dehydrated food, because it has so many uses. For example, produce can be dehydrated and used for stews, soups and other delicious recipes all year long. So, even if one has far too many vegetables from their garden, the food will not spoil. Another great example of popular dehydrated food is dehydrated fruits, such as raisins, apples and pineapples, just to name a few. These go great with nuts and a few chocolate chips, and make a great on-the-go snack (trail mix).

Types of Food Dehydrators

There are many different types of food dehydrators, and they come in a variety of sizes, so there is definitely one to fit into just about any kitchen. They can dry fruits and vegetables, and, for those of you who love such treats as beef jerky (which is delicious when made with the right marinade recipe…experiment to find your favorite flavor), you can even dry meats, such as beef and poultry (fish too) in a food dehydrator, and many people use dehydrators and smokers interchangeably.

There are three types of food dehydrators, those that blow hot air from an element in the bottom of the machine, of those that blow hot air form an element on the side of the machine, and those that blow hot air from the top of the machine. Food dehydrators do not use a lot of electricity either, and it is actually cheaper to use one of these handy little gadgets than to use a conventional oven to dry foods, which is done over long periods of time at low temperatures.

How A Food Dehydrator Works

Food dehydrators have shallow trays that stack on top of one another, which the food is placed on. For the best and fastest results, the food should be sliced thinly, and placed on the trays in single layers. Basically, a food dehydrator will suck the water from whatever food you are trying to dry.

Different foods dry at different speeds, so it may be necessary to check the foods at specific intervals, especially if you are drying different types of foods at the same time. Also keep in mind that there are some really delicious flavor combinations that can be created with a food dehydrator, so have fun and experiment with different flavors. Just remember that in order to prevent juices from meats dripping and contaminating other foods, it is important that you place any meats on the bottom racks.

It is incredibly simple to dehydrate your own food, and it can save you a lot of money in the long run. Think about it. Many of us waste a lot of food because we buy too much, and end up throwing it away. With a food dehydrator, we can preserve a lot of those foods, even meats, which can save hundreds of dollars each year. There are many different types of food dehydrators available. To learn more about the various types, you can find all kinds online at http://www.877myjuicer.com/dehydrators.html.

Everyone knows that it is necessary to get a certain amount of fruits and vegetables in our diets, because of the nutrients and vitamins they contain. These vitamins and nutrients can also be found in juice made from fresh fruits and vegetables, and can be made at home for a fraction of the price of buying prepared juices at the supermarket.

Regular Juicers vs. Steam Juicers

For many years, people all over the world have been using juicers to extract the juice from their fruits. This has been a great way to get juice, but, even though the juice provides many vitamins and nutrients, there are just as many that get lost in the juicing process. Because juicers get hot, they do heat the fruits and vegetables somewhat, which causes them to lose many of the vital nutrients.

Steam juicers on the other hand work in an entirely different manner from traditional juicers. Instead of crushing the fruits to extract the juice, steam juicers use steam to press the juice out, giving the user 100% juice which has lost none of the nutrients of the original foods used.

How Do Steam Juicers Work?

One of the really great things about steam juicers is the fact that you do not have to peel and seed the fruits before juicing. This makes the job a whole lot easier, and a lot less time consuming. Basically, you place the cut up fruit (you can use grapes and berries whole), inside the top section of the steam juicer, and water in the bottom section. The water is boiled, creating steam.

The steam actually gets right through the skins of grapes and berries, and forces the juices out, extracting them through a straw-like tube. Not only can steam juicers be used to make delicious juices, they can also be used to make soups and jellies, and can even be used to cook some meats, such as small roasts and chicken breasts, which come out extremely tender, juicy and delicious. You can even make concentrates that can be stored for months, even years. So, you can actually say that a steam juicer is a meal-maker.

The NutriSteamer

The NutriSteamer by Back to Basics is a multi-purpose steamer which can make delicious juices and jellies, soups, meats, and steamed vegetables, for an all-in-one meal-making machine. And, it is so easy to use! All you have to do is add water to the bottom section of the NutriSteamer and your fruits in the top section. The juice is extracted through a heat-resistant tube that is surgical quality.

Not only is the NutriSteamer a product that you will use over and over again, it is great-looking too. The NutriSteamer is made from polished stainless steel, and is a great addition to any kitchen.

The Benefits of Juicing Wheatgrass

These days, everyone is looking for the newest and best “super food”. One that is very quickly becoming popular is wheatgrass juice, because not only is it a dietary source of energy, it is also loaded with vitamins and minerals that are important for maintaining good health. Many people are using wheat grass juice because of the many health benefits it is said to offer.

What Is Wheatgrass?

Wheatgrass is just as the name implies: grass from the wheat plant. This is young grass, and is harvested during the early stages of growth, when the vitamin and mineral content are the highest. Wheatgrass is loaded with vitamins and minerals, including vitamins C and E, as well as B complex vitamins. It is also full of iron, magnesium, potassium, calcium, zinc and many other necessary minerals. In addition, wheatgrass is extremely high in chlorophyll, and has more than 15 amino acids and 80 enzymes, and when used in juice form, provides many of the day’s required vitamins and nutrients in a single serving.

Health Benefits of Wheatgrass Juice

The health benefits of wheatgrass juice are numerous.

Wheatgrass can prevent and/or treat a number of health conditions, and is an excellent source of nutrients that are great for overall good health.

It can even be used topically for many skin conditions, including sores and rashes.

Some of the conditions that wheatgrass can help with include: cancer, athlete’s foot, tooth decay, diabetes, weight loss, anemia and acidosis.

Wheatgrass juice is a known anti-inflammatory, and is wonderful for those suffering from arthritis and other painful conditions that cause swelling.

Wheatgrass is also an anti-oxidant, and helps to reduce the harm done to the body by the environment (such as the effects of air pollution).

Wheatgrass can also be used as a protein supplement, because it provides nearly 50% of the daily recommended intake, which, according to the American Heart Association, should be about 35 grams per day for the average adult.

Juicing Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass juice is extremely popular, and many people who use it like to make their own wheat grass juice directly from the grass, rather than buy it pre-made or in powdered form. This is simple to do with the right juicer, such as the Healthy Juicer-Manual Wheatgrass Juicer from Lexen Products. This is one of the best juicers on the market, due to its ruggedness, and the fact that it is so easy to use and clean. The Healthy Juicer is made to juice leafy greens, and is the ideal machine for juicing wheatgrass.

The Healthy Juicer is a masticating juicer, meaning that it crushes and squeezes the greens, extracting much more juice than a regular centrifugal juicer. In addition to leafy greens, the Healthy Juicer also takes pieces of fruits and vegetables, so there are all kinds of options for delicious, healthy wheatgrass drinks.

The benefits of using wheatgrass juice are well-documented, and it has been proven time and time again to be a great tool in fighting many ailments and diseases. The juice is grassy but sweet-tasting, and the pulp that is left over can be used in many first-aid applications, including easing the pain of sunburns.

Today we have a guest blogger, Tom Hines, from Nutrition Geeks. Thanks Tom for the info!

Modern eating habits

Our modern day diet contains sweets, refined carbohydrates, aerated colas, saturated oils, salts; not to mention other unhealthy ingredients like artificial sweeteners and preservatives. In addition, a lot of healthy constituents are missing from these foods, chiefly, high quality proteins, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fibers. All of these have collectively led to a number of so called metabolic syndromes or disorders which were non-existent a century ago. Obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and a number of cancers have their origin in unhealthy living and dietary habits. In fact, some early researchers had surmised that the basis of all diseases is oxidative stress and unhealthy food. There has been a renewed interest in this theory of late.

Combating stresses of modern life

As the world progresses towards better facilities, our lives are getting easier. Gone are the hunter-gatherer days when an individual had to be fit to catch a prey. No one walks long distances since the advent of the car. Technological advances have affected us in all spheres of life. This has lead to our society gradually becoming ‘soft’ and unfit. To combat these changes, fitness and health guidelines recommend more physical activity and imbibing of health food. A rapid advance in nutrition science has helped us better understand our daily dietary needs. However, the rough and tumble of modern day life causes great stress on the human physical and mental health. A simple and effective way to counter these unwanted stresses is supplementation with superfoods.

Food supplements to combat stress

A wide variety of health and sports supplements are available. Of these, protein powders and vitamin supplements are the most commonly used. However, these do precious little to combat the stresses of day to day life. More recently, focus has shifted to the so called green superfoods. These, by definition, are of plant origin and contain all the nutrients required for sustenance of life. Indeed, many consider them to be ‘complete foods’, i.e. when consumed alone, they are capable of sustaining human life. A number of green superfoods are available in the market to choose from. Spirulina, chlorella, barley grass, wheat grass, stevia, ginseng, wheat germ oil and garcinia to name a few.

Spirulina’s health benefits

Spirulina is a microscopic plant which is quite versatile. It can grow in all sorts of environments including rivers, springs and lakes. It is a blue – green algae which manufactures most of the nutrients through the utilisation of sunlight (photosynthesis).

Spirulina is quite rich in its protein content (60%). Also in terms of digestibility, spirulina protein is second only to egg protein. Add to that, the impressive range of other contents: vitamins like A, B complex, C, E, Folic acid, pantothenic acid, inositol and minerals like calcium, iron, chromium, phosphorus, zinc and magnesium. Additionally, it also contains beta carotene and phtyochemicals.

Spirulina has glucose and cholesterol reducing effects and thus has been claimed to affect diabetes and cardiovascular diseases favorably. It has a gastrointestinal protective effect due to promotion of bacterial flora in the gut. Anti-inflammatory action due to phycocyanin present in Spirulina has been allegedly shown to protect against rheumatic arthritis. Also, a study in India showed regression of oral cancer lesions due to chewing of tobacco leaves. Spirulina has also shown promising results in fighting HIV in a study conducted by the Harvard Medical School. Last but not the least, allergies, including asthma, have been shown to benefit in some way from daily supplementation with Spirulina.

Chlorella’s health benefits

Chlorella is single-celled, blue – green algae. Much like Spirulina, it utilizes sunlight to produce nutrients. It is considered an efficient food source; it is rich in proteins and other essential nutrients. In the dry state, the constituents by weight are: proteins: 40%, carbohydrates: 20%, fats: 20%, minerals and vitamins: 10% and fiber: 5%. It is also a good source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), comprising almost 40% of all fatty acids present.

Chlorella has been claimed to reduce blood levels of lipids and cholesterol. In addition, it has shown promising results in patients with high blood pressure. Also, enhanced immune functions and improved wound healing have been documented to occur by some. Renewed vigor and vitality are the other positive effects associated with chlorella.

Conclusion

Daily supplementation with superfoods, can potentially, help prevent the symptom profile of some of the more modern diseases like obesity, high blood pressure, etc. Anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties form the basis of their effectiveness in conditions like arthritis and asthma. Moreover, they prove quite effective in combating a wide variety of stresses due to their anti-oxidation properties.

Superfoods are, as the name suggest, ‘super’, in the way they provide a ‘complete food package’ and help human beings fight diseases and infections.

I’ve discovered Chia seeds! I can’t stop singing that song from the commercial advertising the Chia Pet! Remember that one?

Yes, the chia seeds that everyone is discovering now are the same ones that we grew on our countertop so many years ago. Am I dating myself here? C’mon, someone out there must remember the chia pets? Those little clay figures? I think I had a sheep and a human head.

I certainly knew that one of the latest additions to a living food lifestyle was chia seed, but I didn’t use it. Then one day I was trying to find another remedy for my daughter’s stomach aches and stumbled across a post on chia seeds. It said if you take one teaspoon of dry chia with water to swallow, in 15 minutes your stomach ache will be gone. Let’s look more into this cute little seed.

The chia seed has been around for centuries and was used as a staple food by the Indians. They would eat a teaspoon full when they went on their 24 hour marches. Indians going from Colorado to California would take only chia seed for food. Its use as an endurance food has been recorded as far back as the ancient Aztecs.

Chia seeds are the perfect food for athletes. This tiny seed is highly hydrophilic. That means it absorbs large amounts of water. They can absorb over 1o times their weight in water. It can also regenerate muscle tissue for conditioning athletes and weight lifters. Chia in your system will absorb the water you drink and hold it in your system longer. Studies have been done showing that eating chia seeds will slow down how fast your body converts carb calories into simple sugars. This is great news for diabetics! This slowing down allows for greater endurance. Carbs are the fuel for energy in our bodies.

Chia seeds gel in the stomach and as it moves through our digestive system it can help prevent some of the food that we eat from getting absorbed into our system. This is of great help when dieting or trying to eat less. You will feel fuller faster and in turn this will help you eat less and be less hungry. Chia seeds can be a great addition to your detox program. They are high in fiber and healthy oils.

What about stomach aches? Raw foods consist largely of hydrophilic colloids. Cooking, on the other hand, precipitates food’s colloidal integrity. This change alters the hydration capacity of our foods to interfere with their ability to absorb digestive juices. Eating raw food allows us to not need hydrophilic colloid. Raw food contains enough hydrophilic colloid to keep our gastric mucosa at a good balance. For those of us who suffer from gas, slow digestion or heartburn, we need more hydrophilic colloids incorporated into our foods. Some of these conditions are not helped with eating raw foods. However, consuming chia, a hydrophilic colloid, can help certain people with their symptoms.

Chia seed contains Omega 3 and Omega 6 in their oil. They also are high in alpha-linolenic fatty acid which makes this seed a healthy dietary source of fatty acids. No, you don’t have to grind them like you do flax seed. They are relatively easy to digest. Flax seeds are not. Chia seeds are also a great muscle and tissue builder. As a source of protein, it can be digested and absorbed very easily into the tissues and can be utilized by the cells rapidly. This would’ve been great when my daughter was going through some major growth spurts. Do you have growing children? Or are you pregnant? This benefit of the chia is good for you too!

Last, but not least, the chia seed is a rich source of calcium. It contains the mineral boron. Boron acts as a catalyst for the absorption and utilization of calcium by the body.

Chia gel works as a fat replacer for many recipes. Just prepare it with pure water and it will absorb 9 times its weight in water in less than ten minutes. You can put chia seeds directly in any of your smoothies. You can also sprinkle them on top of yogurt or your cereal or add them to salads. I’ve been putting them in my green smoothies. The only time I get stomach aches now is when I eat cooked foods, so I am really looking forward to getting my daughter to try them for her stomach issues.

I’ve always been a multi-tasker, but recently have found myself forgetting things and muti-tasking has become more difficult. The other day I walked down two flights of stairs to get something in the basement. Once down there, I put what I needed on a shelf and started another quick project in the basement. A few minutes later I walked back up the two flights of stairs and sat at my desk only to discover I had forgotten what I went into the basement for! The books were still sitting on the shelf in the basement! Now I understand this could be great exercise, but REALLY? I spoke with my friend who said she was suffering from the same thing and was starting to get worried about it. Then we forgot what we were talking about and went on to the next subject.

I’ve written before about some symptoms of menopause and since I’ve started to have a few more myself, thought I’d catch you up on some more natural alternatives. My hot flashes lasted (so far) a month or so. Every day and night. I try to drink some sort of smoothie every day and I always add ground flax. I feel much better and recently read that flaxseed is a super-food and can help with menopause symptoms. Women used flaxseed in ancient Babylon 5,000 years ago. Greek physician Hippocrates recommended it back in 400 B.C. Flaxseed contains compounds called lignans, which mimic hormones without the harmful side effects. These lignans may, in fact, prevent both breast cancer and colon cancer. This seed is commonly used as a laxative. Another benefit! Flaxseed and flaxseed oil have both been used to reduce total blood cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. The result? The reduction of the risk of heart disease. Flaxseed oil is great too. I sometimes put that in my green smoothies, however it doesn’t have the fiber that the seeds have. You can buy whole seed in your store and grind it in a coffee grinder or seed grinder. Be sure to store it in a glass, air tight container in your fridge to extend the life of your seed. Also, grind only what you need if you can. It will turn rancid more quickly in its ground form.

Flaxseed can be added to any smoothie; green, chocolate or fruit. You can add this super food on top of your fresh fruit, in your oatmeal, cereal or on your yogurt. Be sure to use ground flaxseed. Nutrition experts agree that ground flaxseed is better. Whole flaxseed may pass through your intestines undigested. This means you won’t get all the health benefits. So grind it up girls. Here’s what Ameriflax says about substituting flax in your recipes:

Substitutions in Recipes

For Fat
– Substitute flax for fat in your recipes, using 3 tbsp ground flax seed for 1 tbsp of margarine, butter or cooking oil. Flax can be substituted for all or some of the fat, depending on the recipe. Note that baking with flax, as fat substitute will cause baked goods to brown more quickly.

For Eggs
– Substitute a ground flax seed/water mixture for eggs in recipes such as pancakes, muffins and cookies. Use 1 tbsp ground flax plus 3 tbsp water – left sitting for several minutes – for each egg. Note that this will result in a chewier version of the recipe, with less volume.

And then there’s your skin. Hormones can wreak havoc on your skin. I’ve started to notice my skin becoming thinner and it feels different on my face. Sure enough, hormonal deficits associated with menopause, will start to change the skin. Women, during their 30’s, begin to produce lower hormone levels. The symptoms of this do not usually begin to appear until her 40’s. This is the stage called perimenopause. I wish I started some things before this time. I’m here telling you this so you can! At menopause, women experience a drop in three hormones: estrogen, progestin and follicle stimulating hormone. The loss of estrogen has the most significant effect on the skin. The amount of collagen and elastin in the subdermis breaks down and gradually declines, blood supply decreases, and the dermis thins. This has also affected the strength in my wrists. And the results of all of this please? Dry dull skin, changes in texture and pore size, and additional lines and wrinkles. Thanks.

There are also changes in skin tone. More freckles or patches on the cheeks and/or around the mouth. Your pigment cells decrease by about 10% every decade after the age of 30 and with menopause, women begin to see irregular pigmentation. Estrogen promotes the permeability of blood vessels and the loss of that hormone can cause blood vessels to stiffen and break, which can create broken capillaries. Hot flashes will cause further damage.

Here are some key ingredients to look for in your skin care products (you may want to begin treatments before the symptoms start):

Peptides - These are bulky molecules made up of amino acids each with specific skin functions. Palmitoyl pentapeptide stimulates collagen and elastin formation. Argireline helps prevent wrinkles caused by muscular contractions. Oligopeptide 34 helps combat irregular pigmentation.

Pytoestrogens – These naturally occuring plant compounds possess estrogen-like qualities.

Retinoids – Vitamin A in the form of retinol or retinoic acid, improves skin elasticity, re-texturizes and helps reverse photodamage and enhance new cell growth. Retinol is one of the few skin care ingredients to be scientifically studied and proven in clinical trials.

Moisturizers - Dehydration is the number one skin problem (This is really noticeable on me, even though I drink ALOT). Look for high powered humectants and emollients, such as: sodium hyaluronate, shea butter, vitamin E, natural oils, squalene and ceramides, in your moisturizers.

Skin, after menopause, will continue to degenerate. Your skin could lose up to 30% of its collagen in the first five years of menopause.

Take the time now to replenish your skin, before menopause. I’m learning and guess what I did yesterday? That’s right, I looked for moisturizers!
