Sure it can–but you have to make it that way! So much to do, so little time. Make breakfast, eat breakfast, get the kids off to school, get yourself off to work, make lunch, eat lunch, grocery shopping, make dinner, eat dinner, get everyone ready for bed. Wake up and do it all over again the next day. But wait…..what about Dr. appointments, laundry, paying the bills, getting your haircut? Ok that last one I just can’t compromise on. I’m actually going to drive to VT from VA next week just to get my hair cut!

Let’s start with your morning routine. Are you jumping out of bed with the alarm or are you setting your alarm for fifteen minutes before you actually have to get up? Try it. During that fifteen minutes spend some time “waking up”. Take some deep breaths from your toes through your head. Get some extra oxygen in your body and your cells. Stretch in bed or out of bed. Don’t have time for a yoga or daily exercise routine? Yes, you can do yoga in your pj’s. Very simple to twist, stretch and just breathe before you even get out of bed.

Is breakfast every morning a chore instead of a great way to start the day? Have you tried simply juicing or blending your morning meal? Grab some fresh greens and some frozen fruit and you’ve got yourself a very healthy and filling breakfast AND lunch. And you’ve just made more time in your day. This great green smoothie can be made and you. Here’s another idea. I just started making a chocolate oatmeal milkshake for my morning/lunchtime meal. I bought a bag of buckwheat flakes (the kind you’d use for oatmeal). I also have some organic buckwheat seed. The night before I soak in one bowl, 3-4 dates(the big ones). In another bowl I soak about a quarter cup of the flakes, a small handful of the seed and 4-6 almonds. In the morning, I am ready to blend up my concoction. I add all of the above and some ground flax seed, cinnamon, a little more water (I use all the water from soaking), 4-6 ice cubes, some crushed sesame seeds and a teaspoon of raw cacao. What a treat. With my Vitamix, there is hardly any pulpand definitely very little clean up. Got more people to feed in the family? Just double up the recipe. And making soy or nut milk has now, never been easier. Fifteen minutes? Really? Of course you can add fruit to your drink or use these alternatives to dairy for a healthier alternative on your cereal or oatmeal in the morning. I love it when I can do things the night before. You can make your own yogurt and you will have breakfast, lunch or put this in your smoothie.

What are you going to do for lunch? Well, if you made a green or chocolate smoothie before you left for work, you’d have your meal already. Other than that, something crunchy and colorful for lunch. Veggies are everywhere and it’s almost summer veggie season! Try dipping your veggies in yogurt or light salad dressing. There are some great alternatives to your fast food lunch out there.

And then there’s dinner. Who has time? I need to do the laundry. I need to pick the kids up. And I can’t go another day without vacuuming this house! I know, I have the same problems, only for me it’s feeding the animals. The other day I asked my housemates if they had any jeans they wanted to wash because I didn’t want to just wash my jeans in one small load. Well….now they have countertop washing machines and dryers! How many times has your washing machine spin cycle not worked? And you (or one of your teenagers) really want those jeans….tonight! But back to dinner…one word…crockpot. Or rice cooker…maybe two words. I must admit, I just used one of these for the first time a few weeks ago. Really? Cooked rice that fast? It must be a mistake. But there it was. Stir fry your veggies and the rice is done at the same time. Love foods that can make it through the week and can be enjoyed at a variety of meals. How about dehydrating ? Fresh fruit wraps instead of the store bought version. Nuts with your own seasoning. You decide. Fresh, easy and you have it to take to work for snacking.

Start taking advantage of your free time by MAKING more free time!

Good luck!

The juicing craze! After all of the hype and strict regimens of the raw and juiced diet fads, the whole idea may leave a bad taste in your mouth. But you do not have to learn how to cover up the taste of juiced beets or start watching infomercials with Jack LaLanne revving up his “Juice Tiger.” There is an easy, and yes, tasty way to drink your vitamins and boost your intake of the good stuff.

For starters, you may be wondering why juiced foods are so fantastic to begin with. Simply put, it’s because they are living, unprocessed foods that enter your body in their purest form, with their vitamins and nutrients intact. When you drink a glass of fruit juice from the bottle, you are most likely getting additives and additional sugar to enhance the flavor and appeal. The problem here is that you could have downed a soda if you wanted empty calories, and all for a fraction of the nutrients you could have received if you stuck to au-natural. So great. Now you know you can toss your fruits and veggies into a blender and delicious, nutritious nectar will appear, solving all of your ache and pains, as well as restoring your body to age 21 perfection. Not quite. The concoction you get might taste a bit more like a punishment than a treat. But comparing the thick, amateur juice of a novice to the real deal is like comparing apples to oranges. In order to get into your body, it’s got to taste good. So how do we get from bravery to savory?

First of all, start with what you know. What fruits do you like? Bananas make a fantastic “base” fruit, and your body will thank you for the potassium, not to mention the gram of protein and three grams of fiber. Bananas also tend to help neutralize the tartness of some fruits, so it can be a nice place to start. Not bananas over bananas? No problem! After a few tries at the old blender, you’ll figure out which fruit combination you like best. But what about veggies? How do we make that taste good? Well, right off the bat you will want a fairly decent juicer. Introducing veggies into your juice regimen is going to require a bit more “juice” than a typical blender can pack. But even when you’re armed with the right equipment, certain vegetables need some help from that spoonful of something to help the medicine go down. Your sweeter fruits and vegetables (pineapple, carrots, etc.) can also be used as a moderator to help tone down the all too unpleasant overpowering vegetable taste. Tomato and celery with a pinch of lemon juice makes a great foundation juice, as most people tend to like this health conscious knock off of a Bloody Mary. From here you can add cucumber, spices, carrots, or even a bit of apple juice.

Ok. So you have read this blog, dusted off your juicer (or purchased one), made a resolution, and now you are standing in the produce aisle at Grocer’s Gala and have not a clue what to buy, or why you even wanted to try this in the first place. Before you resign and head over to aisle five to pick up a jug of V8, hear me out. Grab a piece of paper and quickly jot down some health issues that you have that you want to resolve. Next, log on to the internet and do a quick Google search to learn which vitamins serve as an anecdote to your problem. As an example, if you suffer from fatigue than you may be lacking vitamins B12 and B6. Mangos and Kiwi’s have each of these B’s, so get them on your list. Is the common cold a little too common for your comfort level? Well than I am sure you are aware that vitamin C is key. Stock up on your friends in the citrus family. Have you noticed that you are squinting at the menu at your local fast food joint? Than stop eating burgers and fries and pick up some carrots! Carrots are loaded with beta-carotene, which morphs into vitamin A, which gets an A+ when it comes to your eyes. Have allergies? Try Mandarin Tangerines. Upset stomach? Pick up some pectin and grab some grapefruit. You may have to search a bit, but some Noni juice added to your blend can act quite like serotonin on your brain, and some believe it can relieve headaches. Aloe and cabbage have been rumored to do the same, and as you experiment you will find what works best for you.

So you have the idea. Now you have your fruits and veggies at home and you are ready to juice! As you are playing scientist and experimenting, remember to balance your sweets with your not-so-sweets and see what you can get. If you do not mind wandering off the beaten path every now and again, start trying fun additions like cinnamon, maple syrup, parsnip, or other spices. Juicers note: The natural sugar in fruit will raise insulin levels, so keep this in mind when you head into juicing mode. Too much of the sweet stuff can upset your blood sugar levels, causing you to feel hungry too soon. No worries, though. Soon you will have your “recipes” down, just keep experimenting and tasting.

One final note. “Smoothies,” although not as healthful as the juices we discussed above, can be an excellent alternative to typical desserts laden with fat and excess sugar. Dessert smoothies can end up containing a lot of calories, but watching your portion size can be the perfect way to treat your sweet tooth without trying to trick your diet. One of my special blends uses chocolate soymilk as a base. I then add a banana and a few tablespoons of organic, vanilla yogurt. Divide in two glasses and you and the person lucky enough to be dining with you are in for a “milkshake” that won’t leave you with a twist of guilt.

So go forth and juice! Your mind and body will thank you.

Scientist are starting to evaluate the most powerful of the healing factors of celery, a compound known as 3-n-butylphthalide or 3nB. 3nB is a compound unique to celery, responsible for the flavor and odor of celery. Have you ever been cutting up celery and the smell made you want to eat it before you put it in your recipe? Well now you should munch on it a little bit more in addition to adding it to your soups, stir fry, or juicing it.

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, claims celery calms the nerves. It is also good for the kidneys and will eliminate body waste through the urine. Every part of the celery can be used, from the seeds to the leaves and the edible root of this plant. It has a high calcium content. Celery is also used in aromatherapy and in Ayurvedic medicine. Rheumatic patients in Japan are sometimes put on a celery diet. Celery is a high water content veggie, like cucumber. Great for juicing and eating raw too for fiber. Scientists found 3nB while searching for the reason of the medicinal effects of celery such as lowering blood pressure and relieving arthritis.

Here’s what we now know: Celery will reduce high blood pressure and give the effect of calmness. Celery clears uric acid from painful joints and help the treatment of arthritis and other rheumatic problems. Celery helps the kidneys and acts as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant and celery is very low in calories because of its high water content. You can drink celery juice frequently to curb your cravings for sweets and rich food.

Celery is from the parsley and fennel family. The white parts of the celery are shaded from the sun, thus less chlorophyll, compared to the greener outside stems. Celery is the perfect addition to soups and salads. Celery juice is a good mix with sweeter fruit juices because of its salty taste. The nutritional benefits of celery leaves are its high content of vitamin A. The stems are an excellent source of vitamins B1, B2, B6 and C with richness in potassium, calcium, folic acid, iron, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium and lots of amino acids. During juicing, nutrients in the fiber are released, aiding bowel movements. Yes, celery has a natural organic sodium content, but is very safe for consumption. Worried because you are salt-sensitive? No worries. It is unlike table salt, which is harmful for those with high blood pressure.

Recent studies have shown that celery may also help to combat cancer. Celery is known to have at least eight families of anti-cancer compounds, which will stop the growth of tumor cells, block the action of prostaglandins that encourage the growth of tumor cells and coumarins which help prevent free radicals from damaging cells. Celery will also balance the body’s blood pH, helping to neutralize acid and bringing you to a more alkaline base. Celery juice is the perfect drink for after your workout. It will replace lost electrolytes and rehydrate your body and has been shown to effectively and significantly lower total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol. Celery can also be used as a natural laxative, relieving constipation. Also use celery juice to help regulate body fluid and stimulate urine production, which is important to help rid the body of excess fluid.

The polyacetylene in celery will relieve all inflammation like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, asthma and bronchitis.

3nB has been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce the formation of arterial plaque in experimental studies. This will also increase the elasticity of blood vessels and lead to lowering blood pressure readings. Celery is also a diuretic. Most diuretics have dangerous side effects that result from either too much potassium or sodium. Celery extract acts as a diuretic but does not alter the ratio of sodium to potassium in the blood. The research on this is preliminary and some people will respond to this treatment and others won’t. This is also typical with conventional drugs. Drugs will lower blood flow to the brain, leaving people feeling tired, depressed, and forgetful. Celery extract has been shown to not only help prevent strokes, but also improve blood flow as well.

I have low blood pressure, and some people have had problems with celery because it will make their blood pressure even lower. I’ve never had a problem with it, so far. Listen to your own body..

Statements are meant to be informational only. Please consult with your medical practitioner if you are considering celery extract or celery to treat your symptoms.

Fun but true fact: celery was used in ancient Greece as a reward in sports contests.

The American Dietetic Association recommends 25 grams of fiber daily for women and 38 grams for men. Most of us are only getting 15 grams of fiber a day. The World Health Organization extimates cardiovascular disease causes approximately 17.5 million deaths per year world-wide. A vegetarian or living food lifestyle will greatly lower your incidence of heart disease than it will for meat eaters. Saturated animal fats raise cholesterol levels and clog arteries. Eating a well balanced vegetarian diet will give your body the heart-healthy nutrients it needs. Foods like fruit, veggies, and whole grains are easy and fun to prepare and eat.

These six food compounds can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease: Soluble fiber, Potassium, Carotenoids, Omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins and Flavonoids.

Soluble fiber combines with water in your GI tract to absorb cholesterol and stop it from being distributed through your body. It will also push it out of you. We all know how great fiber is for elimination, right? Sometimes called roughage, fiber is the indigestable portion of plant food. Wikipedia says, “Soluble fiber, like all fiber, cannot be digested. But is does change as it passes through the digestive tract, being transformed (fermented) by bacteria there. Soluble fiber also absorbs water to become a gelatinous substance that passes through the body”. What foods are fiber filled? Whole grains like oats, barley, and pinto beans, potatoes, brussel sprouts and fruits like apples, plums and oranges are good sources of soluble fiber, whereas 100% bran cereal has more insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber will pass through the body unchanged.

Potassium is associated with lowering blood pressure levels. It counters the effect of excess sodium and aids in transmitting nerve impulses and promotes normal muscle function. Both effective for optimal heart and blood vessel health. Foods like potatoes, bananas, dark leafy greens, pumpkin seed, avocado and almonds are high in potassium. Potassium deficiency can lead to high blood pressure problems, hypertension, strokes, and heart irregularities. Meat, poultry and fish are high in potassium, but it’s not healthy to eat an entirely carnivorous diet. These foods will cause a rise in acid levels and deplete potassium levels. Instead of supplements, try a slice of cantaloupe, a banana or strawberries.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that play a key role in heart health. These are a class of polyunsaturated fats. They cannot be manufactured by the body so must be obtained from food. They contain molecules that will ward off blood clots that can trigger stroke and heart attacks. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and prevent risk factors associated with chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer and arthritis. You can find Omega-3 fatty acids in flaxseed, flaxseed oil, walnuts, soy, and baby dark leafy greens like watercress and arugula.

Low blood levels of B vitamins and folic acid have been found to increase the risk of atherosclerosis, which can lead to heart attacks and stroke. Atherosclerosis is a condition in which fatty material collects along the walls of the arteries. Some sources of B vitamins are fortified breakfast cereals, sunflower seeds, potatoes, broccoli and asparagus.

Flavonoids have antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties that protect you against heart disease. They keep the lining of the arteries flexible which will promote healthy blood flow and reduce clotting. Catechin is a flavonoid compound found in tea and cocoa and it can reduce heart disease. It’s found in dark chocolate, green tea, red wine, extra virgin olive oil and apples. Soy flavonoids (isoflavones) can also reduce blood cholesterol and can help to prevent osteoporis.

Carotenoids have fat solubility and antioxidant properties. These plant chemicals are a big factor in fighting heart disease. and give fruits and veggies their yellow, red and orange colors, not to mention the green in plants. There is evidence they interact with bad LDL cholesterol and prevent if from oxidizing and sticking to the artery walls. Food sources of carotenoids are carrots, spinach, kale, collard greens, red peppers and tomatoes. However, to maximize the availability of these carotenoids in your food, they should be eaten raw or lightly steamed.

And please….don’t forget your emotional heart. Feeling emotionally healthy is just as important. Get in touch with your physical and emotional body. Yoga, meditation, chi gong…all great ways to start “feeling”. Releasing all the “baggage” will detox your blood as well as your muscles.

Breathe, breathe and breathe again. Keep going……

I’ve mentioned many times in this venue how raw, living food is what will allow the body to heal. Not cooking your food keeps enzymes, oxygen and water content in your food, and therefore making it better able for your body to absorb. Heating destroys nutrients and your food’s enzymes. Heating also destroys water soluble vitamins like vitamin C and all the B vitamins. I still eat a small amount of cooked food, but it just doesn’t taste the same anymore. I’m eating more vegan food as well as high raw foods. The past couple of weeks, since I’ve been moving around a lot, I’ve had a cucumber for breakfast almost every day. I know vegetables for breakfast? Yes, and you can too. It’s all about changing your patterns. Fresh organic produce has been easy to find these days. I am in the Adirondacks in New York State taking advantage of the local farmers markets every week.

If you want to get good at anything, you have to focus, learn and invest some time in learning how it works, right? Everyone needs to learn about taking care of their body because everyone has a body. In addtion to your “day job”, you need to make the time to learn the basics of taking care of your body. The reason we believe what the drug companies, media, agricultural and food and beverage companies have to say is because we are nutritionally ignorant. So let’s learn a little bit more about the food we cook on a daily basis.

When you cook food on a grill, stove top, oven, camp fire or a microwave, you are changing the molecular structure of the food and change the nutritional content and digestibility. This structure becomes denatured, deranged and degraded, and the molecules are changed into new chemical configurations and carcinogenic byproducts are formed, thereby promoting a broad spectrum of allergies, infections and degenerative diseases.. Certainly the degree to which this happens depends on the cooking time, temperature and method of cooking. Heating food above 105-120 degrees F, destroys all enzymes and lowers the concentration of vitamins and minerals. You body can produce the enzymes necessary for digestion and absorption of food, however this process requires a great deal of energy that would otherwise be used for the process of elimination, fighting disease, and allowing you to function at an optimal physical and mental level.

In cooked foods, fats are carcinogenized, carbs are caramelized, and proteins are coagulated and become virtually unusable by the body and fiber becomes barely usable in the colon. Heating food also creates toxic byproducts. Here’s a few of these dangerous byproducts:

Acrylamides: Cancer causing byproducts of cooking carbohydrate food such as breads, potatoes, pastries and any other kinds of starch. The FDA acknowledges on their website the perils of acrylamides, but the processed and fast food industry would rather you don’t know about these.

Epoxides, Hydroperoxides, unsaturated aldehydes: These three are generated when you cook the fat from meat, milk, eggs and fish. From Wikipedia, “An epoxide is a cyclic ether.” The rest of the definition on Wikipedia was not even understandable to me.

Furfural/furans: generated when sugars are heated. Wikipedia states, “Except for occasional use in perfume, furfural remained a relatively obscure chemical until 1922, when the Quaker Oats Company began mass-producing it from oat hulls….When heated above 250 degrees, furfural decomposes into furan and carbon monoxide, sometimes explosively… Furfural is also used as a solvent in petrochemical refining….”

Nitrosamines: When nitrogen oxides in the gas flame from gas ovens or barbecues interact with fats, these toxins are created. Nitrosamines are chemical compounds of a chemical structure, some of which are carcinogenic.

Polycyclic Hydrocarbons: These carcinogens are generated from the charring of meat. From Wikipedia, ”PAHs occur in oil, coal and tar deposits, and are produced as byproducts of fuel burning….as a pollutant, they are of concern because some compounds have been identified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic….PAHs are also found in foods. Studies have shown that most food intake of PAHs comes from cereals, oils and fats. Smaller intakes come from vegetables and cooked meats.”

Hydrogenated oils and Trans fats: These are man-made. They are also called hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats and were specifically developed to allow processed foods to sit on the shelf longer without going rancid. Many of today’s common foods are now cooked in these trans fats. Consuming these fats can lead to obesity, heart disease, an increase in bad cholesterol and lowering of the good. Also keep in mind when you heat common cooking oils, the heat denatures the oil molecule and causes the oil to turn rancid.

Are you still asking yourself what happens to you if you eat cooked foods? Digestive leukocytes is a term that refering to when your body produces an increase of white blood cells, indicating the body is on the attack. This response also happens when you eat cooked food. However it does not happen when you eat raw foods. A build up of toxic, acidic waste materials, often referred to as “free radicals”, accumulates in the skin, liver, nervous system and brain when you consume large amounts of cooked food. When you don’t get the proper nutrients in your diet, your white blood cells are always on the attack mode. Toxic waste are circulating in your weak and overworked body, allowing it to breed common ailments such as allergies, headaches, sinusitis, diabetes, heart disease, erectile dysfunction, depression, arthritis, osteoporosis, and various cancers will thrive. Unfriendly flora build-up is also a byproduct of cooked foods. Unfriendly bacteria take over the colon, feeding on thick, undigested and uneliminated cooked food putrefying in the intestines. This flora will give off a waste product that is a food for cancer cells. Eating a plant based uncooked diet will decrease the toxic load on the colon and will also decrease unfriendly bacteria and its dangerous byproducts.

Not cooking your food will have the following benefits: Weight stabilization, increased energy, more restful sleep, radiant skin, enhanced mental clarity, increased immune function and prevention of illness. You don’t need to eliminate all cooked food from your diet to have these benefits. How about just substituting one meal a day with raw food for starters? Or if you are already doing that, how about increasing to one day a week eating nothing but uncooked food? Most people believe lunch or dinner is their best bet for raw. Large salads with every veggie in the fridge, juicing a meal or sandwiches with sprouted grain bread (these breads are usually available in the frozen section. They are baked at low temperatures to retain the nutritional content of their ingredients). Top your sandwich with all raw ingredients, like veggies and sprouts. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just make it colorful.

Be proactive about your own health. Stay informed. It’s your job.

As always, consult your primary physician if you have questions regarding your specific circumstances.

I remember eating salad growing up. I remember carrots and potatoes placed beside the meat on my plate. I remember tuna added to the spaghetti sauce. I’m sure we had vegetables. My brother had a garden in our backyard. I remember pictures of him tending to it. Most of my knowledge about vegetarian and living food comes from my parents, but not when I was a kid. I learned most of it later on in life when they both started their own vegetarian/living food lifestyle.

The body requires electrically charged foods. This energy comes from sunlight and many veggies are a prime source of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is vital for photosynthesis, which is what plants use to obtain their energy from light. The body needs vegetables to aid in the making of essential nutrients. Leafy greens are a high alkaline food. They contain protein and important amino acids used in breaking down protein. Past eating habits have built up highly acidic environments in our bodies.

Broccoli-all parts of the broccoli are highly nutritious. An antioxidant, it also contains potassium, calcium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, magnesium, beta-carotene and Lutein. Great for dipping, lightly sauteing or blanching. You can also make a raw broccoli soup by putting all parts of the broccoli into your Vitamix blender, combined with water, onion and any spices that float your boat.

Cauliflower-contains calcium, potassium, sulphur and silicon. Try juicing the leaves and the flower for a highly beneficial drink. You can also eat raw, make a mock mashed potato either cold or cooked, by adding garlic, olive oil and onion. Cauliflower also has sulforaphane which enters your bloodstream and helps your antioxidant defense systems.

Celery-mmmmmmm. A highly nutritious, alkaline veggie. Juice it with the leaves on or eat raw with almond butter topping. Celery can reduce blood pressure and help with appetite control. It contains chlorine, sodium, potassium and magnesium.

Kale-a favorite of mine for making green smoothies. Kale has phytochemicals high in sulphur and aids the body’s detoxification enzymes. It contains sulphorapahne which comes out when kale is chopped, chewed or juiced. Other nutrients in kale are calcium, iron, Vitamin A, C and K, beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, with are known to help protect against molecular degeneration.

Beets-Ok, this in one veggie I haven’t gotten my daughter to eat. I think they taste like apple and absolutely love them either raw or lightly cooked. Victoria Boutenko says eating beets should not turn your urine red. Juiced beets can have a high sugar concentrate. Sugar beet juice was used in Chicago to help prevent ice build up on the roads (just a little tid bit for you). Beets are a very good source of betaine, potassium and folate and can help to replenish iron that is lost during the menstrual cycle. It is good for the liver and heart health.

Red Bell Pepper-source of Vitamin A, C and Potassium, it also contains Lycopene. Red is better than green when it comes to peppers. Green peppers can be hard on the digestion.

Avocado-another yummy veggie. High in heart healthy monounsaturated fat, it also contains Vitamin E and glutathione. We need fats in order for the body to work. Make guacamole by adding tomatoes, sea salt, and onion (optional). Dip other veggies like carrots, cucumbers, or mushrooms into it instead of chips.

Put a salad together with all the above ingredients and add flaxseed oil, a dash of any seasonings that you enjoy. You can also add apple cider vinegar or liquid amino and top with any sprouts you found at the local market.

How can you get your children to eat them if they won’t? First, keep trying to add different veggies to their plate. Babies have taste buds not only on their tongue, but on the sides and roof of their mouth. This means they could be very sensitive to certain foods. But as they grow, the taste buds disappear from the sides of the mouth. As you get older, your taste buds become less sensitive and you will most likely be able to eat foods that you didn’t when you were younger. Change it up. Add color and mix veggies in with pasta or soup, or use veggies to dip into their favorite dressing.

Enjoy your veggies!

Last time I talked about fasting. A great way to allow the body to rest. Our bodies use so much energy digesting food, that a one day fast a few times a month, can certainly help with healing, not to mention you could learn a lot about yourself. What’s the difference between a fast and a cleanse? Here’s what Wikipedia says about a cleanse…”Body cleansing or detoxification is a treatment in alternative medicine which proponents claim rid the body of accumulated harmful substances that exert a negative effect on individual health. Critics argue that such cleansings are often unnecessary, and are based on questionable or disproved scientific claims.” Do I think they are necessary? Read on………

Certainly the object is to relieve the body of the stuff that accumulates over the years. I’ve heard stories of not just waste product, but one woman said she released a crayon that she had swallowed as a child during a cleanse. Not convinced? Here’s more…..My parents and brother were working at a well known health retreat where detoxing with raw food, wheatgrass and green drinks, is the first step to healing. My Dad tells a story about a woman who was diagnosed with a tumor in her uterus and before surgery; she was going to give this process a try. One day my Dad is walking by her room and she comes running out screaming “I passed the tumor! I passed the tumor!” Sure enough, that’s what she actually had done. She took the mass to her doctor for diagnosis. Get ready for this…..not for the squeamish……The mass was a tampon that had remained in her body for probably years and the body was protecting itself from this foreign body the only way it knew how. Hence, the tumor. Ok, so now you may be ready to set an intention for your cleanse or fast, right?

There are many forms of cleansing. I chose the raw food way. It took about three months. Eating living food for three months, I believe, totally cleaned out any leftover waste product that was in my colon. It also cleans out the emotional “crap” in your body. Again, the body needs the rest from digestion in order to start the healing process. Toxins like undigested food, left in the body, will start to look for something to feed off of. These toxins also give off waste product of their own, and cancer cells in your body will feed off this waste product.

There are many varieties of cleansing from dietary restriction to supplements. Herbs and supplements can speed up the process of detox. You can also buy products that are for specific areas of the body, such as the colon, liver or kidneys. You can use teas, drops, pills or liquid for your cleanse. Wheatgrass juice is intended for rapid detoxification and well as general health. It is a living food. It will immediately go to where it is needed in the body. When I did my wheatgrass cleanse, I expelled mucous that was the color and scent of a common household cleaner. I have a cleaning business and was inhaling way too much of this product over a ten year span. Cleansing can also reduce and eliminate cravings from food to tobacco. It can help with weight loss, increase your energy and alleviate some chronic diseases.

I’ve seen in my reading, many medical doctors saying that cleansing is totally unnecessary because the human body can maintain itself. I certainly would’ve agreed to that a long time ago. However, now humans smoke, drink, abuse drugs and take in more processed and genetically engineered food than ever before. Faster is better. The faster chickens grow…..the faster tomatoes grow….well you know the rest.

So back to can the body heal itself? Absolutely, that is what it is intended to do! But not if we continue to abuse it. A cleanse is the perfect way to give your body a break. Taking out processed foods, sugars, caffeine and alcohol are just for starters. Does that mean you can never have a drink or eat a cookie? Of course not, everything in moderation…..harmony. Start to wonder. What is it that you need? What could be building up inside of you? Are you attached to it? Are you ready to release and start healing today?

Today, I wish you release of the physical as well as the emotional stuff that is holding you back from total health.

You know me by now. I get so many of my “ah ha” moments from what happens to me and who comes into my life. It’s all about the lessons we learn every day. Not just on the day we want or the time we want. Being open to what presents itself to you on a daily basis is truly living in the present moment. Last week I heard a story about a woman who had gained some weight, but only in her stomach. She thought it was age and started a diet, but when her stomach didn’t shrink at all, she thought about another symptom she had (I didn’t find that out) and decided to get a colonoscopy. Jump to the end of this very sad story, that doesn’t happen too often in this small town I live in, she had a massive tumor in her colon that was causing her stomach to protrude. Her surgery was yesterday. I heard that and I immediately said to myself, “I need to do a liquid fast.”

I’ve fasted many days in the last 5 years or so. Usually I do a one day fast. That’s no food, no chewing, just liquid. The liquid varied depending on whatever I felt like that day. The day after the fast, was usually light or all raw food. Wikipedia defines fasting as this “the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. A fast may be total or partial concerning that from which one fasts, and may be prolonged or intermittent as to the period of fasting. Fasting practices may preclude sexual activity as well as food, in addition to refraining from eating certain types or groups of foods…..A complete fast in its traditional definition is abstinence of all food and liquids except for water.” If you are healthy, a one or two day liquid fast could be something to try.

Here’s what I did the other day: The first day I juiced one cucumber and one long stalk of celery and then drank nothing but water or water with fresh squeezed lemon for the rest of the day. Was it difficult? To be honest, it usually is. I typically will fight it the whole day and think about food all day. But this time, it wasn’t. I kept saying to myself, “I’m not going to die if I don’t eat. I’ll be fine. The food will still be there tomorrow.” The “feeling” of not having enough is pretty common. And to top it off? They had a going away party for me that night at the yoga studio where I teach, complete with many treats, even raw treats. I felt fine not eating and I wasn’t guilty about the food that was brought and I didn’t partake in. I knew if I started chewing anything, even raw food, my mind would want more. I was determined to go the whole day and then see what tomorrow would bring. I had some emotional stuff to go through that night and it was all very clear. Without my body having to digest food, my mind was totally supported in processing the “stuff” of the day. The next day I had another cucumber/celery juice and drank water. I ate some nuts and a peach in the afternoon and then I had a tuna sandwich that evening. The next day (that’s today) I have had only lemon water. And that is my plan for the rest of the day.

You see? Whatever you can do, whatever it is, your body will be very happy with it. The body could sure use a rest from digestion. Parts of the nervous and circulatory systems play major roles in the digestive process. Here’s a great site for reading about the digestive process: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/yrdd/ Just reading what food and drink have to do to get through the body made me tired. And our goal is to eat the right food, so that the correct nutrients can be absorbed and used by the body. Fasting is a perfect way to give the body a rest in order for the mind and body to be able to do what it is inherently supposed to do, and that is to HEAL ITSELF.

There are many different kinds of fasting and cleansing. I just heard about a book that talks about taking out 5 things from your diet for a 21 day cleanse. They were dairy, alcohol, coffee, sugar, and gluten. Whatever you can do for however long you can do it. There isn’t a right or wrong when it comes to fasting. Don’t put that judgement on yourself. It’s ok. Think about more raw food, less processed food. How about just a one day fast? I’m right there with you. Today’s the day for you…or maybe tomorrow.

What can you do when the end of the day comes and you really want to eat something? I do these things: Go upstairs and read a book, get as far away from the kitchen as possible. Take a walk. Drink a very large glass of water. Brush your teeth. Talk to a friend. Play with your cat.

Sending you feelings of health and well being.

Please consult your primary health care physician for fasting lasting more than two days or if you are suffering from any medical problems for which you are under the care of a doctor.

If you are a teeth clincher or a grinder, listen up. If you don’t have some sort of jaw problem like TMJ (temporomandibular joint syndrome)yet, great. Hopefully some of these ideas will stop you from wearing away tooth enamel, increasing your teeth’s sensitivity, causing loose teeth, morning headaches, sore jaw muscles and painful chewing. My experience? I’ve had it all. When I was in my teens, my jaw started popping and clicking. Eventually I was evaluated by a dentist and I started wearing a night guard. I’m sure it protected my teeth, but it also made me clench harder. Eliminating or avoiding stress? Impossible, stress is a part of our life. Managing stress? Absolutely possible.

The jaw muscles are very strong. Hard to tell whether you have tight facial muscles until you start massaging your face. I’m going to start there. Even if you don’t clench or grind, these massage techniques are easy to do while sitting watching TV or at your desk. Grab under your bottom lip with your thumb and the side of your forefinger, starting at one side and moving to the other. Pinch gently and pull out until you feel a little sensation. Hold for a count of five and release. Do this 3-5 times. Also pull on your ear. Grab the back of your ear with your thumb and the front of your ear with your forefinger. Pull away from the head. Walk your fingers up and down your ear. There’s also eye yoga! Move the eyes up, to the side, down and to the other side. Rolling the eyes and moving them around the face of a clock. Notice any tension in the eye socket. During the day, shrug your shoulders up and down, drop the head to both sides and twist the neck, turning the head to the right and left. Most of us have overstressed muscles especially on the right side of the face. Notice if you only chew on the right side. Does chewing on the left make your jaw sore? It could just be under developed muscles on the left.

What to do while you sleep? Sleeping on your back avoids pressure to the neck and face. Use a thin pillow, keeping the head in line with your back. Before you fall asleep, take some deep breaths and on the exhale, release your head into the pillow. Try this a few times until you actually feel the sensation of sinking into the pillow. Lips together and teeth parted, allow your tongue to rest gently in the mouth. Set your intentions to sleep peacefully and not clench or grind your teeth. If there is someone by your side, ask them to make you aware of any grinding that you do at night. I had to retrain myself. I never sleep on my stomach anymore. I mostly sleep on my back. If I do sleep on my side, I sleep on both sides equally during the night, using a pillow that won’t lift my head higher than my top shoulder. Again, while I was suffering a lot of grinding, I set intentions for my new sleep habits.

Try also cutting back on caffeine and refined sugars and white flour products. Many doctors believe grinding is a nutritional problem. B-complex and vitamin C supplements with zinc also, may help reduce stress reactions. Also linked to tooth grinding, a deficiency of calcium, which is effective for treating involuntary movement of muscles, and pantothenic acid, important for proper motor coordination. You can check doses of these supplements in the book, Prescription For Nutritional Healing, by James Balch, M.D.

What does Louise Hay say about the jaw? And I’m listening to this one. Anger. Resentment. Desire for revenge. Your mantra….I am willing to change the patterns in me that created this condition. I love and approve of myself. I am safe.

Relax, breathe, surrender…….

If jaw pain last longer than a few weeks, consult your doctor.

Do you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep? These problems could be short term, lasting for less than 3 weeks, or a chronic condition. Insomnia could be due to anxiety, mental stress, nutritional deficiencies, poor sleep habits, physical disorders like sleep apnea (a breathing problem), or a reaction to medications. A good night’s sleep consists of four or five 60-90 minute cycles, REM (rapid eye movement) and four stages of light-to-deep non-REM sleep, in order to achieve physical and mental well-being.

Here’s something I didn’t know, minimum daily requirements for sleep are genetically determined. Your sleep pattern will stabilize in early adulthood and vary from 4 to more than 10 hours in a 24 hour period. I am a 8-10 hour sleeper. My daughter is a 10-12 hour sleeper. She started that when she was a baby and continued through her teens, although college life has drastically changed that pattern! Before I started yoga, I was experiencing levels of insomnia, waking up at night and obsessing over what was coming up the next day or analyzing what happened yesterday. It seemed I had fallen out of my habit of being a good sleeper. And that was exactly what happened. I was under high emotional stress and getting up at night and going downstairs to eat something had become my new pattern. I had to retrain my brain and body. Yoga helped with that. It calmed down my “monkey mind” and reminded me that I could get back in control of my sleep pattern. I started rituals before sleep. Going through the day and being grateful for all that happened and setting an intention to have a good night’s sleep before I closed my eyes. Turning my clock to face away from me was another way I stopped obsessing. I no longer looked at the clock when I woke up in the middle of the night. So many people tell me they wake up at a certain time every night. I ask them, “How do you know what time it is?”

I believe the best sleep is achieved between the hours of 10 and 2 am. Avoiding caffeine, heavy meals, and strenuous exercise for 3-5 hours before bedtime can help you fall asleep. Limit mildly stimulating factors like alcohol and nicotine. James Balch, from his book, Prescription For Nutritional Healing, says…”Foods like cheese, chocolate, sauerkraut, bacon, ham, sausage, eggplant, potatoes, spinach and tomatoes contain tyramine, which increases the release of norepinephrine, a brain chemical stimulant, causing insomnia”. Try relaxing with a warm bath or shower, soothing music or reading. Get up at the same time every morning, if you have to nap, limit them to one hour and go to bed one hour later. Increasing foods that contain iron and copper may improve your sleep. Dried beans and fruits, red meat, nuts, tofu, also may help you maintain sleep. For nervous tension that creates sleep problems, try carrot juice combined with apple, grape pear or pineapple.

Want to try a supplement? Thinking there’s something else missing? Try B complex, Vitamin C, or some natural alternatives like herbal teas containing chamomile, hops, passion flower, peppermint, rosemary and valerian root. I lived on the homeopathic remedy of Nux Vomica for a long time. And there is that one ingredient, which by now should be in your cupboard and is called the Vermont remedy, 3 tablespoon apple cider vinegar with honey and water. Massage? Pinch just above the bridge of the nose, and inch behind each earlobe, the center of the nape of the neck or massage the sole, heel, sides, ankle and the tops of your feet. Here’s the best remedy…deep breathing! Slow, deep breathing….full belly breathing. Set your intentions for the night and do some slow counting backwards from 100.

And here’s Louise Hay’s take on insomnia..Fear, not trusting the process of life. Guilt. Your mantras for the evening? I lovingly release the day and slip into peaceful sleep, knowing tomorrow will take care of itself.

Wishing you sweet dreams.

If your symptoms persist, please visit your doctor. The information written here should not take the place of your primary care doctor.
